Anyone who doesn't say the Wii is just bitter.
Sure the lasting effects of the Wii might prove detrimental in the future, but that thing changed a lot of things and will historically go down as one of the if not the most profitable gaming console of all time.
It was the 1st device to REALLY push motion control as an input function. Sure Eyetoy existed, but the Wii was the thing that really pushed it.
It made Nintendo godly amounts of $$. I'm sure the Wii made more profits than the entirety of the other 6th+7th gen consoles (I guess this is kind of unfair since Xbox1/PS3 lost a crapton)
Thing was a miracle, in a world where everyone, even Nintendo itself stated that they wouldn't make another console if Wii failed.
Even on the chance that PS3 wins in units sold in the future (if China opens up by then), when people look back at this gen, it's going to be known as the gen of the Wii.
http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)
I'm still playing my PS3 ,and it's still getting the best games of the year. I think PS3 also got the best games of the year in different genres throughout the generation. So PS3 is the winner for me.
Sales; Wii.
Financially; Nintendo dominated and it appears MS did well.
I'm surprised anyone is saying PS3. They lost market share in spite of having great momentum from the PS2 and had record financial losses. PS3 is hardly a winner.

Touching stuff.
But this belongs in a thread about your favorite console.

Third party profits are irrelevant to whether a console won a generation.
The Wii won.
If anything PS3 is the loser of this gen, XBOX brand had grown tremendously and the Wii was a huge win for Nintendo. Long term effects for Nintendo may not be good, but they still won.
You know something is seriously wrong when you start suggesting Sony are the most profitable console manufacturer.
