Forums - Microsoft - What kind of games should MS make?

So we already know that MS has been working on strengthening their first party offerings. They've opened several new studios, and promised us 8 new IPs for X1's first 12 months on the market. It'll be great to see that content, and no doubt a lot of us are already speculating as to what these games might be. We'll find out soon enough.

What I want to know is what types of games you think Microsoft needs to be investing in? They already have a huge FPS franchise in Halo, and the most critically acclaimed racing franchise in Forza.

For me personally, I think there's one main area that they really need double down on. RPGs. MS had a good thing going for them back when Bioware was making exclusive titles for them. Titles like Jade Empire on Xbox, and the original Mass Effect on 360 were big selling points for me as an RPG fan. Fable has it's charm, but after the first game it's transitioned more and more into an Action/Adventure game. I'd love to see MS invest in creating a new powerhouse RPG franchise.

Do Zelda better than Nintendo does it. It shouldn't be hard to outdo Skyward on the areas of combat and overworld and not-anime, and there's no competition in the space at all.

MS pumped the market from 2007-08 with great JRPG titles that nobody in the West gave proper attention. Now everybody blames them from doing just what sells.

They definitely need to branch out if they want to escape the shooter-centric, bro-fest generalization.

Part of why I'm a Sony fan is because I like variety in gaming. It's not the most lucrative approach, certainly, when you measure sales for individual titles, but I do think it leads to better global sales and, ultimately, more consoles sold.

Having said that, I will admit that such a strategy might backfire, however. A large part of the Xbox demographic IS the Halo/Gears/CoD player who doesn't stray that far from those titles or titles like them. Investing in a Little Big Planet or a Donkey Kong Country type game might not see acceptable returns.

Still, you'd think that there would be room for experimentation. Nothing wrong with trying something different at the start of a generation to see if it sticks. Personally, I'd say they need something with a fantasy setting, to offset the aliens-and-guns vibe. That would be one way to get my interest. It could even be something gritty, like The Witcher, which I think would go over well.

Being practical, they probably need something to replace Gears. Rather than another cover shooter, though, perhaps something with stealth elements and a bit more tactical gameplay? I think the Xbox fanbase would also respond well to that.

An RPG that mixes the best of both Skyrim and Dark Souls.

That would be brilliant. They have the money to fund it. They should do it. Would sell Millions, would get 90+ reviews, Don Mattrick would have something else to clap to at E3.

That would be like the best game ever

They will only make what sells, they dont care about a niche...so your answer is cut out for you. Its not really about what the core want, which will mostly be variety. There will be more shooters. Mark my words there will be more shooters this gen.

My answer is cut out for me?

I'm asking you guys what you'd like to see, not what you think we will see. Why come in with a response like that?

Alan Wake 2, I know it's not happening after Sam Lake came out and essentially stated the sales were a disappointment and weren't enough to justify a sequel. ;(

Yeah same for me, Alan Wake 2, loved 1, but unfortunately sales disappointment and MS doesn't look like they want to support it. Which is a shame as the DLC expansions apparently did very well.
