Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Files Complaint To Acquire Xbox One Websites

Microsoft has filed a complaint over XboxOne.com and XboxOne.net in hopes of taking control of the domains.

According to Fusible, Microsoft's dispute is filed with the National Arbitration Forum(case number 1501205, currently listed as “pending” on the NAF database), and the company is seeking to acquire the websites from a single UK resident who owns both. The WHOIS info for both domains suggests that they were registered on December 29, 2011 by a Krasimir Hristov Ivanov who resides in London.

We reached out to Microsoft and a representative provided the following statement to IGN:

“Microsoft's domain name portfolio is a part of its ongoing business strategy, but beyond that we have no comment.”

Microsoft previously registered a handful of domain names for rumored Xbox codenames including Xbox 8 and Xbox Fusion. It’s worth noting that Microsoft also does not appear to own the Xbox One Twitter account.
So it Microsoft going to bully him into giving them the website?

What are the rules on domain squatting?

Uh, pretty typical.

Well he did own it since 2011 way before the xbox one was announced.

Had it for over a year... and MS didn't think to register it before? Also, I don't think the FB page is ran by MS either

It's not, a friend of mine actually owns it as of right now. I expect it won't last though

I know it's fun to take shots at the "Evil corporation" here and call them a "bully", but this guy simply registered these websites for the purpose of extracting money in the event that there was an XBox One.  He's not even using them.  I have no respect for cyber-squatters.  They're scammers.

Well the guy owning it has had it for a while (possibly a while before MS decided on the name for the console) so do MS have a right to just take it away? Isnt this what dodgy corporate bullying is? Even if the guy made a good guess as to the XBO's name beforehand, so what? Its not illegal what he has done and he is not trolling the console. I reckon MS should buy him out - they have the money and I am sure it will be cheaper than litigation.

I'm sorry, but the chances of MS choosing the name "Xbox One" for the name of their new console was diminishingly small, nobody would have predicted it in 2011. A far more likely scenario is that the guy was planning on making a fansite for the original Xbox, and it fell through.

they were changed in favor of MS in this case back in the early 2000's.  i remember back when i was reeeally into weezer the drama of when weezer took weezer.com from a fansite after the law changes.  if you own the copywrites you basically have dibs on the website or something.  MS will win this.
