The true weaknesses of the XBox One have nothing to do with this article. This article points to the reveal not showing any games, but that doesn't mean the One won't have any games...

Sometimes I wonder if gamers really are so stupid to think that. Either way, E3 will tell you if the system has a weakness.

Now, all we know is that MS is pushing the system as an all-in-one entertainment box. Its true weaknesses come in the form of certain policies and poor relationships with indies, but that was nowhere in OP.

that's sort of irrelavant.  over the last few years MS has earned a reputation for not caring about the 'core' gamer.   they started the xbox guns a blazing with exclusive content and then it dried up and many of their exclusives went multiplat.  while sony kept firing with more and more exclusive MS put out kinect and facebook and bunch of other service oriented crap most 'cores' didn't care for.

so the problem isn't that xbox won't play games.  the problem is that the message they've given re-enforces their image of think of the gamer as secondary to everything else.  marketing and image is very important to whom a product sells to.

When the interviewee says "I don't think anyone from Sony lost any sleep", it means he basically thinks Sony sees no threat due to the conference, which is crazy because whether the games are shown or not, Sony witnessed the unveiling of the competing platform and the specs as well as the overall strategy being unveiled.

I understand what you're saying but that barely transpired in OP, and the conclusive remark of the author "he kind of makes sense because Sony had games at their unveil" just makes it more clear that this article is either uninformative or misleading.

So microsoft targetted another audience than gamers at their conference is reason for Sony not to lose sleep, color me educated.

@bolded - I was going to say that.

I don't understand why the rage about not showing games, the even was for them to reveal the console and it's capabilities, functions and what it looks like and E3 will be there for the reveal of games... is that so hard?

Is intelligence sucked away from gamers the more they play? Please tell me what games you guys play so I stay far away from them!

Well I guess the simple answer would be that giving a reason for not showing many games and sticking with TV stuff mostly doesn't make the conference any less boring to watch, it's just the reason it was so boring.  You're correct that not showing games at their conference is not a good reason to damn the platform in general, but it's a pretty good reason to damn the conference.

I've been playing Time and Eternity and Civilization 5 mostly.  Just so ya know.

Yes the conference was boring as hell I worked all night and slept 3hours to make sure I don't miss the conference and god was it a long hour. But it was clear at the end that their goal wasn't to present games but to present the console's functionalities and how the new Kinect would work... no need to trash MS constantly for not showing games...

Unfortunately I can't stay away from Civilization

Well I guess that's just the issue with the plan MS went for.  Since this conference is all we've had of the platform people are going to trash it for a bit because they only have a boring conference to base their opinion off of until E3.  At least it's only 2 weeks until E3 hopefully redeems the platform in the eyes of gamers at least from a "here are the games" aspect.

Civ 5 is an addiction lately, I'd play it more often but I play with friends and they're a bit busy.  Which honestly I can only be thankful for.

...

True.

Take my love, take my land..

This is his perception of what he has seen so far, from a developers point of view. It is up to MS not him, to change his mind. His perception cannot be right or wrong.

He is right though, Multiplat developers need both systems to do well (and probably will) and that is what he wants.

I agree with the dev and the OP. I get that we are supposed to expect the unveiling of games for the platform during E3. I get that PS4 didn't have a perfect press conference either. But I also understand that a vast majority of websites and news articles (even on mainstream outlets like Yahoo) had a majority of positive feedback from fans for PS4 and negative feedback for XBox One after their respective press conferences.

And that's the point here along with all the other posts which have criticized Microsoft. I'm not saying MS won't have games and the company won't put a lot of effort into their product. But they underwhelmed at the press conference by unveiling their machine with little care for the fans that buy their products. They just didn't give gamers any incentive to be excited, and I don't really think many other consumers were overjoyed by the announcements of the machine's functionality with respect to TV.

Isn't a press conference supposed to inspire and excite? If it's just relegated to being a pre-show for E3 in which the functionality is displayed and all the boring bullet points are covered, what's the point of even having it? The reality is that MS could have potentially stole PS4's thunder by simply showing some games, but they didn't.

And I'm not saying these press conferences or E3 will be truly indicative of either product, but I think most of us complaining about the borefest that was MS's press conference have an issue with just that...their press conference. So if you have to defend MS with a statement like "MS will show games at E3 so get over it" or similar, you are only reinforcing the point that the unveiling was underwhelming so we have to WAIT for another show to really get excited about the product.

See, for example, my point is not that "they will announce games at e3 so get over it". My point is that anyone bashing the console due to lack of games shown at the conference are lost.

At the same time, your opinion is more interesting, you think the conference itself was bad and that the industry media is highlighting that.

I think my main argument against that is that the conference wasn't meant for gamers but for the mainstream. What tends to happen in gaming media, even those like yahoo's gaming section, is that they are covered by gamers. If the conference wasn't targetted towards gamers, then these writers will be disappointed and it will transpire in their coverage.

However, from a mainstream standpoint, what the One showed is a strategy for success imho. Had the mainstream been watching the show, that would have been better. I think the real problem here is that microsoft targetted the gamer in their pre-unveil hype, and ended up targetting the mainstream with their content. This kind of disconnect is what is plaguing the industry at the moment in my humble opinion.

I agree that there was a disconnect in which audience the unveiling was intended for (judging by the content it certainly wasn't the gamer but more of the IPad user who wants another spiffy do everything gadget) and who MS ultimately targeted (the gamer because it's an Xbox).  Either way, the conference left a lot a fans with bad feelings and it didn't get any hype stirred in the mainstream audience either.  So that's never good.  Microsoft has had a few other misteps (Windows 8, Smart Glass) in the last year further showing their lack of judgment when it comes to knowing what consumers want.  I guess disconnect is a good word for that too.

Point is even though they will have many opportunities to change public perception, the perception, as of today, still exists and I don't think Microsoft is too pleased with it (they even disabled comments on YouTube).  Like with any type of marketing, perception is reality so even though you and I can separate MS performances with regard to press conferences and products, many won't.  Because of the show, many will see the Xbox One as a product that doesn't put gamers at the forefront and many of those consumers will base their purchases on that perception alone.  Nothing is wrong with that.  When making a press conference, it's not the consumers job to keep the faith; it's Microsoft's job to excite all of its audience...not try to divide them by almost completely leaving them out of one show in order to get them on board at E3.  That only causes a lot of backlash and confusion.

I'm sure a lot of money goes into the conferences, but they are put together for a good reason.  To get consumers excited for their products.  Put on a good show and many people will be clamoring for the final product (admittedly with little knowledge of what that actually entails).  Put on a bad show and you get this shitstorm after MS's show.  Either outcome invariably affects the public's opinion of the product.  Guess we'll have to wait till E3 to see if that opinion will be changed...

@danasider. You make good points. I would make a precision, I don't think that MS did a bad show, but I think that they didn't make it absolutely clear before and during the show who they were talking to. It was pretty evident that gamers were put in last place in the conference, given COD being shown at the end. However, this might very well be what they want, to even out the living room. The only issue is, like you said perception is key, so I don't think they properly handled the perception of going in that direction.

Internet is full of Sony fanboys, nothing new.
