Forums - Gaming - How will the internet react when / if Sony announce DRM and pay to play online?

True I very could be wrong I concede that. Its just the rumors reflect what I think is inevitable.  From a financial perspective it simply makes sense to charge for online play. The infrastructure is expensive.

It could happen, and I think it's something definitely worth talking about. I'm morbidly curious to see what happens if they do it. (I'm personally running for Nintendo as fast as I can, account system or no, and if they turn off the free MP spigot on PS3 and Vita, too, then Gamestop is going to be flooded with trade ins.) But I do want people to be clear that it's just a very vague and largely unsubstantiated rumor right now.

True and I said in the OP it wasnt fact

SONY's said a number of times that they're not charging for online play. If it it happens, which I don't believe it will, then fuck em'. My PS+ sub is done, and I'll own a PS4 late into the gen IF there's a decent amount of exclusives to be played. PC will become my main platform.

Judging by what the Vita offers, I don't expect this to become a reality.

Just curious about this.  Kotaku whose rumors surprisingly have been nearly 100% accurate about PS4 and Xbox One have also stated PS4 will have pay to play online as well as a pre owned system nearly identical to how MS is implementing it.  Very trustworthy insiders at Neogaf have been saying the same thing.

So Im curious if the internet will doom Sony like they currently are MS or if the reaction will be different. What do you think?

I can tell you what I would do. Buy a Wii U for my Console needs and I instead of a PS4/Xbone I will go PC only. If DRM, always (daily/weekly) online get implemented why would I need a PS4/720 its totally pointless. PC has not one downside anymore. And ease of use makes no difference to me I can handle a PC just as easily as a Console. And yes Exclusives but I have so many games I cant play because of time. So I can easily play the games I can get on PC instead, also Oculus rift.

I doubt this would happen. But i guess nearly everyone would go to Nintendo lol

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Sony patent a lock-on feature already concerned me... They said they won't use it, but why patent such a thing in the first place? O.o

Because if you come up with a solution to a problem, which you may need in the future, you'd be wise to patent it because if one day you need a solution, and all the better ones are patented, then at least you have the one you came up with to fall back on.  You don't always patent for today, but smart companies always patent new ideas.  Whether they're going into a current product or not.  You can always improve a patent, but you can never go back and patent an idea you had that someone else patented.

Fair enough, but this still raises eyebrow of how this will be done. Will it turn out good/bad, who knows? I just hope that Sony is not going to do it as bad as Microsoft or EA. :/

TBH, if Nintendo did this same lock-on patent, I would've sound out worse than I'm doing now with Sony.

I'd be furious. I'm sure everyone would be. I think a lot of people will just end up accepting it though, as the PC / Wii U just won't be able to cut it for them. It's ok if one of them blocks used games because consumers can just jump ship to the other console, but it'd be hard to accept if both of them do it.

i will only a nintendo and PC gamer this gen

I didnt think it would happen either but trustowrthy sources that Ive learned not to doubt anymore completly agree that online pay will have a fee on PS4.

Im pretty much positive its happening at this point considering whose saying it.

When he's not even sure it's happening.
