Forums - Gaming - How will the internet react when / if Sony announce DRM and pay to play online?

The reaction won't even be 1/10 as negative as it's been for Microsoft. To many people, especially here on VGChartz, Sony can do no wrong. Meanwhile, Microsoft can do no right.

This.

I remember the start of this Gen when sony could do no right and MS could do no wrong.

Its just at the start of the Gen Sony was doing everything wrong and now like it or not MS are the ones doing everything wrong. Anytime the focus of a console moves away from games or towards DRM or overpricing, the gamers get angry, it happened to Sony and now its happening to MS.

I still geuinly hope and pray that MS will respond to this backlash, by stripping some of these drm features, and never once mentioning TV at E3, its a new Gen it needs to be games games games, unhinded by bullshit.

Due to the inevitable high price tags on these products the people buying these things at launch are hardcore gamers. If your gonna go for mass market casual, need to get price right down.

Then the console market just a got a whole lot weirder.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie  Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)

I'll just use my PC.

To all those people saying "I will continue gaming on pc" - but what do you play then? I always thought it was Sony's strong 1st-party-games that make you buy Sony-consoles and not the free-online and "no drm"? Especially because "no drm" is already gone, iirc.

Yeah, lol. I also wonder if they use steam....

What do we play on PC? Why games of course :)

PC has a larger gaming library than the Xbox360, PS3 and Wii combined.

The Deal breaker for me this gen is the account bound retail games.

Steam gets away with it by being an online service, by NOT being a publicly traded company and by earning the respect and trust of PC gamers through years of service and giving back to the community.

Neither Sony nor MS has my trust to operate a bind on account console, PC after all, is 'backward compatible', what happens in 6 years time when the next PS and Xbox is not?

I am the type of customer that Sony and MS loves, I am a heavy consumer with a combined library of over 100 PS3/360 games this console life cycle; I strictly avoid used again unless its impossible to get a game brand new, and I will buy games that I don't even expect to play at full price just to support a developer that I like.

Next gen neither Sony or MS is getting my patronage if they go through with this debacle.

I am not alone.

We are 7,1 bn people on this planet - no matter how obscure your opinion is, there is always someone with the same opinion... But obviously you are not the one I was asking. I was asking the ppl who intended to buy ps4 and would perhaps switch to pc-only given a strategy-change by Sony.

I didn't want a repition of a pc-consoles-summary, we heard it too often here.

even though if Sony implements DRM, that would mean it was always on the card since the inception of its rumor, but they choose not to talk about it and People will sign blame on MS and EA for forcing this move on PS4..

Oh, so now Microsoft is conveniently ahead in their development of the console? I thought they were 1.5 years behind or something according to you guys?

It has begun!!! MS MADE THEM DO IT, I SWEAR!!!! LOL!!!

What!!?? who said anything about MS development.. Man! MS fanboy are dellusion.. u guys know how to make a normal conversation into an argument. my statement was Pro MS not against them.. I tip my hat to u sir!

It wasn't directed at you, but to everyone in general so sorry if that's how it came off. Sony fans have said numerous times that the Xbox ONE was behind in development and I couldn't help myself when you typed, "People will sign blame on MS and EA for forcing this move on PS4.." when the ONE was supposedly behind, if anything the PS4 would have pushed it on the ONE in that case.

It's just this site, ya know.... Sony can't do a thing wrong, MS does everything wrong.

thats Cool! The problem with this whole DRM issue is that both sony and MS have had concieved or looked at it same time, But MS shot themselves in the foot with half baked answers, if they would have just comeout and said what are the benefits of having a DRM feature like this instead of various MS employees giving out different reponses and creating the confusion.. it would have been easy for people to digest

I dont support the DRM which MS are trying to implement. But as dust is settling down i realized that I m not in PS2 era where i could just take my console out or lend my games to my friend who wants to try it.. thats why we have demo's for..  But I do buy second hand PS3 games, coz in some countries like India games are expensive not as expensive as its in US, for us its 40$ for a AAA game at launch, still its looked upon as a huge sum for a game.

Having said that the way sony implement the DRM with PS3 with their online pass and not hindering the single player experience I m fine with that. even MS should have done something like that just cut features from the game (like no achievments on used games)

I did intended to buy a PS4... And Sony's first party exclusive is a big factor in coming to this consideration, I am also one of those that will swtich to PC only if this strategy-change goes through for the PS4.

"but what do you play then?" - games!

What I was trying to say that, yes I will miss the PS4 exclusives, some more dearly than others, but there are other games to play, and as compelling as the exclusives are, I still prefer not to support a movement that I strongly dislike.

And its not as if I'm walking away for an oasis into a desert.

PC has one of the most compelling library of any gaming platform,  supports from most 3rd party developers, a thriving indie community and a Retro scene made easy with services like GOG.

I think the rumor mill for the XBox One and the PS4 is running a bit out of control.

I doubt Sony will go to pay for online services honestly. If anything, PS3 PSN is supporting their new PS4 online functions for a while and I doubt they'd be stupid enough to abandon the model that differentiated them from their competition and which has been one of the main selling points of their PS3 system so far.
