Yes, consoles are comparable to phones and tablets.

I dont think Nintendo and Microsoft got the memo on the distinction. The only one who has stayed away from cellphone or tablet influence is Sony.

Yep, Nintendo and MS are trying to reach out to smartphone and tablet customers...

MS is already in the phone tablet business and Nintendo came out with a touch screen system many years before WiiU, plus they've already said they started experimenting with a touchscreen controller for Wii's successor before the smartphone/tablet craze.

Point is the market doesn't see consoles and Smartphones/tablets in the same way. Consoles are largely seen as a luxury while the latter have become almost a neccessity and part of everyday life.

Well, it's not seen as necessary, but still, it's hard to find a home without console in EU/NA/Japan

Seems to me like there was an awful lot of emphasis on military shooters, sports games, and collaborations with the NFL and fantasy football and what not.

This console does have "casual appeal" but not really in the Wii way, they seem to still be staking the male gamer as the core audience, just branching out from games to also include other things that same guy likes (fantasy football, Game of Thrones like TV dramas, etc.).

Microsoft pretty much painted the American flag on their system with that conference.

The Xbox One targets "hardcore casuals" who play Call of Duty, Madden, FIFA etc... the best selling games.
Don't complain that the new Xbox doesn't have JRPGs it's Xbox! You know what you are getting.

Are you seriously thinking of COD and Ea sports' games as Core games ?

If you said Skyrim or Battlefield I could understand, but that is just ... Naive.

The core audience is an audience that is loyal, buy a lot of games and like to try new things.

COD and EA sports fans play 4 hours a week (on a year basis, not right after their game came out) and most of the time play one or two different franchise. This is no core players. it's casual.

Casual is not only mario.

So one military shooter is teh hardcorez but another is casual?

I never liked the term "hardcore" gamer because it's just too vague.

I think there are basically people who really enjoy the act of FOLLOWING video game news and discussing about it, in addition to just playing the games, and then people who play a few select "mainstream" games and aren't really that interested in talking about games on gaming forums.

I think the former might get really upset about the Xbox ONE and not value a lot of the features like the NFL partnership, but I'm just not sure how big they are compared to the rest of the people who enjoy playing CoD, Madden, Fifa only.

I think it's really hard to tell the situation Xbox is in right now. Basically, you're not going to get the truth until you do some market research and surveying of the people who aren't ranting about Xbox One on the internet. They're going to be the main buyers of this console.

Difference between Wii and Xbox One is three fold (imo and from the little I know):
1. The Wii had a low price point. Now, I know that the X1 hasn't had it price revealed yet but with the things we know about its specs and the fact that it will likely come with the Kinect 2, its hard to believe it will be less that 400$
2. The Wii had Nintendo games. This seems like an obvious point but I'd say there was a fairly large amount of gamers who bought the Wii solely for Nintendo games. The X1 doesn't have this luxury as the Xbox exclusives aren't as big system sellers as Nintendo exclusives. It is hard to believe that someone would buy the console solely for the exclusives (although it will likely happen with a relatively small devoted following).
3. The X1 will likely have 3rd party support. This pretty much puts it as a direct competitor to PS4. Will gamers/non gamers buy a console with 1st and 3rd party games or a console with 3rd party games and misc services? That is yet to be seen...

Basically what I'm saying is that the X1 has positioned itself in an interesting place hoping that services will out-compete Sony's exclusives which is a very different place than where the Wii was which was a cheap and accessible game player. Because of this is expands into the literal non-gaming market and could potentially sell as a TV buddy instead of a games console and I could see it being purchased and never gamed with by some.

DISCLAIMER: I do not know everything about the Xbox One, its future, its games or its competition's games. I am only basing this off the information I know and I believe I can logically assume. Regardless, feel free to contest my points, I'd love to hear the counter points.

Depends. I still don't think all the TV functions will make sales explode. They need games!!

Well, pokemon and Shin megami tensei are both rpg, but one is casual and the other is hardcore

No, the online once a day thing and preowned games issue will stop it from succeeding. We just need to make sure Microsoft make this clear to everyone. And all it seems to appeal to is Americans, as a British person where is some minor culture differences, that was blindingly obvious. It certainly won't appeal to the Japanese then and because of the online issue it won't be popular in the developing world either which is getting important for the gaming industry now
