Forums - Gaming Discussion - GT5 passes Halo Reach in global lifetime sales!

Thanks. We can now only compare games that release at the same time. That's helpful for future discussions.

come on, this is ridiculous.

No, I didn't say that. You can compare whatever you want. But if you want to see which gamse have sold better, then it makes sense to compare games that released at the same time, for obvious reasons. That's why I don't understand why you're calling this comparison "pointless." It makes much more sense to compare those games than GT5 and Halo 3. This is definitely thread worthy.

In fact, I remember PLENTY of threads back in the day predicting which would sell more between GT5 and Reach. They were quite huge. I can bring them up if you'd like. You probably posted in them, too. I will find them and bump them for you. Don't stealth edit your posts either.

from the original thread.

im one of those posters with some consistency.

I see I stand corrected.

Looks we've already had the same discussion though. (I still don't know what "barmy" means).

By the way, that wasn't the original thread. The original thread was a BHR-3 thread.

Are you ready to admit that this man didn't just get "lucky" before? It's time to accept that he is the best predictor on this site.

Wha?

Weekly sales - what is popular/what is selling
Comparing games - Halo vs Killzone shows which FPS genre is more popular, likewise with Forza vs GT as well as something indicitive about those console owners
Comparing consoles - shows what is popular so then you can ask why, who had better marketing etc
Comparing an FPS to a racer...erm k? GT fans out number Reach fans. Good to know?

Could you please explain to me the importance in this find as you seem to see something in it that I'm clearly not seeing?

Comparnig weekly sales are relatively unimportant, because the market one week may not be representative of the general market. Comparing the PS3 and 360 are relatively unimportant, since their difference is likely to be less than 1% so it really doesn't matter, and since both are losers anyway. Comparing sales of two games that sold 500k each is relatively unimportant, since neither of those games would have made any significant impact on the market. Yet VGC users are very interested in these things and much more pointless comparisons.

Comparing Halo and GT tells which console has the biggest exclusive. Like I said, you can call it pointless, but having the biggest exclusive is important to many. I'm not interesting in discussing if it's important since importance is subjective. I'll accept that it's pointless (I really don't care what you want to label it). Just know that many pointless comparisons are the basis of this site.

Questions for you though. You seem to be implying that comparing games of the same genre and comparing consoles are objectively more important that comparing the biggest exclusives of two different consoles. Why? Why is it important to know which console had better marketting? Why is it important to know which FPS game is more popular? And what makes those more important than knowing which console has the biggest exclusive? Please, only objective answers.

Weekly sales - accurate trends over large periods of time. You can see when a game boosts a console sale in a given week e.g. Wii U and Monster Hunter.

Comparing the PS3 and 360 is actually more important than that as you have to factor in launch dates and cumultive changes over time. E.g. 1% weekly difference adds up over time.

What does it matter if a console has a "bigger exclusive"? Are you suggesting that the 360 should now invest more into Forza? Should GT start to include Spartans to increase it's audience? Having the biggest exclusive is just horn bashing with nothing really to be gained from it at this stage considering consoles sold etc. Something like SSBB was interesting as 35% of all GC owners owned a copy but there is no significant here between these games. It seems to be more a part of the "my console is better than yours" mentality that plagues console gaming.

Comparing games of the same genre can indicate how receptive the market is. For example, look at Grid vs GT, or any arcade game vs GT. It shows possibly that a well established name is important, or maybe that audiences currently prefer realism. Or maybe it's testament to one dev producing something of a higher quality than another.
It's important to know which console had better marketting than another because being a sales site this site should be (be sure as fuck isn't) used for gauging future success of other consoles and therefore help you with investments whether it's avoiding a console or buying stocks and shares. Basically, do you gain any business insight from knowing if GT sells better than Halo? If the answer is no, then why ask the question? In comparison you can learn a lot about consoles and games of the same genre by comparing sales.

1. Yes, some weeks are important. But most weeks have few new games and are pretty much the same as the weeks before it. Example, all the summer weeks. For the past 4-5 years, the summer weeks have been essentially dull. Anyone could predict what sales would be like during the summer since there's very little change. Yet week after week, the Global UP threads would get massive posts. Seems weird, doesn't it? These pointless comparisons are the backbone of VGChartz.

2. I was talking about lifetime sales. At the end of the day, their difference is going to be very tiny. So if one manages to edge over the other, it's not going to mean a thing. It's not as if developers/publishers are going to change just because the PS3 managed to outsell the 360 by 1-2 million units. It's pointless, but they are the backbone of VGChartz.

3. Again, I personally am not going to argue how it's important because it's objective. But here's something: Whoever has the bigger exclusive title obviously has more fans willing to buy a console for that exclusive. Likewise, this means when their next console releases, we can evaluate how big of an impact that exclusive will have on hardware sales. There, a good reason to be interested in comparing the two biggest exclusives on competing consoles.

4. Like above, comparing the biggest exclusives on competing consoles let's us know how big of an impact these games will have with the next generation consoles. How is that less important than what you said.

5. Gauging future success. Yup, exclusives are very important in that regard. Yes, you do gain business insight knowing GT sells better than Halo. You know that GT would likely boost lifetime sales more than Halo would with the Xbox.

Did I not say that this thread would turn out bad XD

And for the people responding to me about 6 games vs 3 or whatever, I am saying Halo sold more games this gen.

Halo averaged over 6m a year through 6 years and GT averaged over 3m in 5 years. That is what I was saying.

Please stay on topic. This is not about comparing franchises.

The problem with the post would be that it had nothing to do with the topic at hand. The topic was about Halo Reach and Gran Turismo 5, with the possiblity of GT5 "reaching" Halo 3.

You completely ignored the OP. You didnt discuss anything in the OP. You compared the franchises as a whole. Comparing the entire franchises for the generation was pointless. It was pure deflection. It was pure damage control. It was purely off topic.

That was/is the problem people had with it.

1. Basic statistics. Don't skip a week because you think you know what is going to happen....

2. A market is a dynamic thing - lifetime sales are useful, but only part of a bigger picture. And no, you can't predict what the difference is going to be. Who would have guessed the PS3 would have sold almost the exact amount as the 360 at the end of their cycles? You act as if it's a universal law that consoles have to sell within 1-2 mill of each other - go look at the 6th gen.

3. If it is objective than explain....Also flawed logic - bigger exclusive =/= fans will buy console for that game. It may be part of the reason, it may be the soul reason, but you are jumping to a hell of a conclusion by saying "Whoever has the bigger exclusive title obviously has more fans willing to buy a console for that exclusive"

4. Very true, but you don't need to compare Halo to GT to see that either are currently popular franchises that will succeed with at least one sequel on the next gen consoles. You can compare Halo to other xbox  games to see it's success. Pitting it against a PS3 franchise of a different genre seems like shit stirring.

5. With such a minute difference in sales? Unlikely. If we compare GT to Zelda, than you have a more valid point, but picking apart tiny differences, as I said, seems more like finding fuel for console flames.

Let's be honest about things.  This thread was a bad idea.  Go ahead and ignore my comparison  as well as the other 20 comparisons in this thread.  No big deal.

The only reason to put GT vs Halo is to get a rise out of people.
