Forums - Gaming - Quality Ignored: Why Hardcore Gamers Should Embrace PS Vita

Bad marketing isn't the problem, it's the lack of good software at a good price point and a bunch of extra unneeded stuff. (Memory cards and all that)

I mean if bad marketing was really the problem....

Ok so they Vita's marketing isn't as bad as this but yeah it could be better. The problem is trying to sell the Vita during holiday seasons using one of the worst games made of the last decade. I saw way too many Vita ads using CoD:Declassified on youtube.

Vita will be a late bloomer I think. Once it's down to $150 and has a nice library we'll see a lot of late adopters. Hopefully 3rd parties have stuck around to when it gets to a respectable level. A GTA would sell great on Vita I think (the PSP ones did great) because it would be synonymous with the system and the first big title (if it was quality unlike COD). Everyone who bought a Vita would be getting it for GTA and more people would buy a Vita if it had a great GTA which doesn't rely on MP as much as COD.

A sales failure doesn't make a console bad. Yes, I can agree with this sentiment. However, whether or not a failure is deserved is another matter. The Vita is a deserved failure for numerous reasons:

1) Sony overshot the market with their portable console once again. There were things to learn from the PSP, but Sony didn't. The result is that the system, including memory cards, is too expensive to be an attractive buy.

2) Sony's expectation that it can't go wrong. Their software roadmap had an initial push of first party software with the expectation that third parties would take over soon after launch, hence why the release schedule of upcoming first party games is so barren. If the console manufacturer itself doesn't show much support, then there's no reason why anyone should feel sorry for that company.

3) Sony's inability/unwillingness to address obvious problems. The Vita's dire state was long in the making. By the start of last year's summer, everyone (except Jack Tretton) could see it clearly. A permanent price cut on the console and memory cards was needed, as well as additional allocation of first party development resources to send the message that Sony wants to prevent this ship from sinking. With Sony's recent projection for Vita sales for the current fiscal year, there's no indication that there's going to be a first party software push. Even a price cut is doubtful.

All these are things that are/were under Sony's control. Whether or not a failure is deserved depends on what you could have done better and by how much you could have done these things better. In the Vita's case, it's going to be hard for anyone to disagree that Sony could and should have done many things a lot better. It is a deserved failure.

I can agree with you on most points, except the Barren 1st Party for Vita. Its been mostly packed with 1st Party IPs. Soul Sacrifice, Sly4, Killzone Mercs and Tearaway this year. I believe that is really about normal on how many 1st party titles you can have in any given year on the same console.

8 inch screen vs 60 inch .....its really my only conserne.

The PS Vita is a good handheld design for the hardcore gamer but its un apealing to other types of consumers. Casual, tablet users, cell phone user, iPod Touch, and the 3DS.

What the 3DS and iPod Touch have which make them successful is that they have robust exclusive, a major third party support and (most important one) easy to use OS which make them assessable to any consumer from hardcore to casual gamers and users. Even the eShop is slowly getting close to IOS status (besides the movies and music etc.) , in a couple of years, the eshop could have a vase library of games and apps.

The PS systems hardware themselves are so good that I can't bear to game on the Nintendo ones. On top of that, the PSP has an amazing library and the Vita's is shaping up to be, at least, very good.

I have a Vita and a 3DS XL.  No problems for me to play either.  The 3DS gets more play time as there are far more great games out for that, but I enjoy them both.  You stated that the PSP has an amazing library, which it is very good.  The 3DS is more advance than the PSP and also has a great library, so it sounds to me that it's more of a biasness on your part as to why you can't play on Nintendo handhelds.

Sony isn't going to abandon the Vita any time soon. It will probably be around for as long as the PSP was. I think it will end up selling a fair amount of units late in its life-cycle.

I don't see them abandoning the Vita either. In retrospect, many insiders say the console is totally profitable, as in...its not bleeding money but letting in a slow trickle. Also many indie devs are falling in love with the handheld, as digital sales are through the roof for it.

I just want Sony's marketing to get in gear. Sony needs to get a Publisher with WW recognition, make a solid game for Vita, Advertise the Vita on BOTH fronts (tablet market which want multipurpose, and hardcore gaming machine on the go).

Huh?  The Vita OS is awesome.  The Vita PSN Store is really nifty, to the point that I like it a lot more than the PS3 version.

Rumors on Neogaf speculate a GTAV spin off and GT6 Portable could be Sony's KO punch for later this year. This would be just what the doctor ordered if it does become a reality.
