Expectations were higher. At the time, Level 5 was on a roll at creating hit franchises. I wouldn't say it bombed, but I don't think it did super well in Japan either. Especially on PS3.

i see your point of view, but I still think using the word "bombed" is too much, the game did well, but as you said the game didn't sold super well in Japan as expected.

I'm 90% sure it was massively over-shipped in Japan and the majority of the DS version's sales came from bargain bins.

Eh, not majority, but a large amount. However again I would not call it a bomb, right now Ni No Kuni 2 however does look questionable. Given just recently I did not call Dynasty Warrior a bomb, just reaching bomb like levels, so maybe I am getting soft.
