Pikmin flop hard

What the hell is up with Ace Attorney 5? AA4 did 250k in its FW, but then again Layton 6 did over 100k in its FW despite the points.
From what I saw in Japan, there were plenty of AA5 seen in the stores.
At the moment I am guessing that it will get 160k FW.

What a disgrace, Pikmin.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Why are everyone's expectations so high for Pikmin? O_o.

I mean, it's the only Wii-U game to chart in what seems like forever. Certainly it's the only game since launch to get a decent amount of points.

And given just how low Wii-U is selling lately, I don't think you can expect too many people to pre-order. If Pikmin is going to be a system seller to people (I have no idea if it is or not), then they probably won't pre-order the game and just pick it up when they pick up the console.

I wouldn't worry about it. It'll open lower than Pikmin 2; probably Pikmin 1 as well, but given how poorly the console it's on is doing at the moment I don't think it'll 'flop'. Unless your expectations for it aren't in check.  It's simply the wrong game for this point in the console's life; but it can still have some relative success.

And besides, it's been doing very well on amazon.jp these last couple of weeks :)

I hope Nintendo can fix their Wii U problem. Vita is bad enough but 2 consoles not doing so well is not really positive reinforcement for the next gen.

Indeed. Especially when the system started out with crazy pre-orders and sellouts. But I think both have problems just particular to them.

A non-Nintendo dedicated handheld would've been a long shot if Sony did everything right, which they certainly didn't. Meanwhile, third-parties have pretty much abandoned the WiiU, and the flood of current gen ports (not even the full version in some cases) casts doubt on how interested they were in the first place. That forced Nintendo to pick up the slack in a way they clearly didn't expect to after the Wii's success.

I don't know if the PS4 will have either of those problems in Japan. It's main issue will be that the orbit of Japanese gaming in general seems to have shifted to dedicated handhelds and mobile. The 3DS has had the huge sellers over and over again since I started following these numbers, and only recently have PSP sales fallen off.

How the PS4 does will be super interesting. It could revitalize the console market for Japan, but before we can even consider that, Sony has to show a lot at TGS first.

I'm wondering what they'll have for the PS4 that will appeal to the Japanese market in the early days. The biggest exclusives coming at launch--Killzone, Driveclub, and Infamous--look very Western-oriented.

Wait for TGS.

Also it's not confirmed PS4 will release in Japan this year.  That should give it more time to have Japan-oriented games

Which is why I said that Sony will have to show a lot at TGS. We know it'll have FF15, MGS5, and KH3, but there aren't really any other big series announced just yet. I imagine we'll hear about whatever Sony's Japanese studios are doing and the new Resident Evil at least.

Why people use MGS5 as an example? MGS4  sold 0.83 million in Japan . It sold almost double that in Europe.

Do you realize that Japan has 125 million habitants and Europe 500 millions or so? If you take the market by proportion, Metal Gear Solid is bigger in Japan than in Europe. And please, tell me how many third parties games reach 800k copies sold in Japan nowadays.

What a slow day for pretty much everything on the pre-order list.

AZW, Europe is closer to 750 million. Which really says something about Japan at 126 million when it has games that outsell the bigger Euro region. Or proportionally it should at least be about 5:1 in favor of Europe.
