Forums - Nintendo - Capcom Describes Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate as a "Smash Hit"

Without the digital sales numbers, it´s hard to tell.
But it´s not hard to imagine that they could well be even better than the disc version. It is said that a game like Animal Crossing surpassed 400k digital sales in Japan

by the way, the 3ds version sold 1,6 million there.

Seems like PR speak. Even if digital sales matched those of retail, the game still wouldn't be a "smash hit".
Maybe the fact that its the #1 3rd party game is what makes it a "smash hit"?

I would guess the incredibly tiny porting costs are what made the game a smash hit. It's an upscaled Wii game using recycled assets from a title which as appeared on no less than four platforms before it hit the Wii U. Even the tablet features are kludges imported from the 3DS version.

Well, it probably cost next to nothing to port. Slap some HD textures on, put the gamepad stuff in, make sure it runs without crashing....ship it.

If they get $27 per retail game being the publisher (based off of this: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2010/02/anatomy-of-a-60-dollar-video-game.html ), that figures at around $8.9m (330k * 27)....then you add digital figuring at $35 (completely arbitrary as I have no clue on the digital margins)  gives them another $11.5m (330k * 35) and they have earned themselves a nice chunk of change at just over $20m. I sincerely doubt it cost anywhere near $20m to make the port....so yeah, sounds like a "smash hit" to me.

Not only that, but it's a port of a game released a year earlier in Japan. I doubt they expected it to sell much at all.

Especially considering this:

I think is safe to assume why they think this is a smash hit.

You got a point there.

Tri and 3 Ultimate are making monster hunter more and more popular in the Western eye - it was a good investment on Capcom's part and Monster Hunter 4 will probably turn over a larger profit in the West

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

Great news, I'm about to order the Wii U SKU of 3G Ultimate myself as it goes.

You can tell by the comments in Miiverse that plenty of people are buying titles digitally. Can't understand it myself because it works out a lot cheaper buying hard copies plus you can trade them in when you've finished with them.

Let me explain:

Right of the bat many get 10% off the game when it's downloaded, easy credits to pick up small indie games on the eShop, but the real reason: It is extremely great to not have to change discs to play a game. I wish my family would get on board with only buying digital copies.
