Seems like PR speak. Even if digital sales matched those of retail, the game still wouldn't be a "smash hit".
Maybe the fact that its the #1 3rd party game is what makes it a "smash hit"?

Well, it probably cost next to nothing to port. Slap some HD textures on, put the gamepad stuff in, make sure it runs without crashing....ship it.

If they get $27 per retail game being the publisher (based off of this: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2010/02/anatomy-of-a-60-dollar-video-game.html ), that figures at around $8.9m (330k * 27)....then you add digital figuring at $35 (completely arbitrary as I have no clue on the digital margins)  gives them another $11.5m (330k * 35) and they have earned themselves a nice chunk of change at just over $20m. I sincerely doubt it cost anywhere near $20m to make the port....so yeah, sounds like a "smash hit" to me.
