Forums - Gaming - Pachter: Is demand for Star Wars games still there?

Heres our favorite analyst with the issue on star wars! His statements seems pretty reasonable compared to his usual.

"Pachter described the Star Wars brand as a "huge fanboy experience," noting that its appeal may be starting to fade away as time moves on. He explained that he personally attended the original Star Wars movie premiere, pointing out it was more than 30 years ago."

"The fanboys are pretty old. They're getting long in the tooth," he said.

"Now, the past Star Wars games have been really successful. And two of the most successful ever were made by studios owned by Electronic Arts," he said. "One of them was Pandemic; they made Battlefront. That studio's been shut down so I don't know if they can do anything with that. The other, though, is Knights of the Old Republic. That was a huge seller on the Xbox only. It sold something like 7 million copies. So it would be really profitable, even with the big fat licensing fee to Disney."

"Ultimately, Pachter said he believes that if EA and Disney can get it right, both companies stand to make a "ton of money."

Uhh... Disney is bringing Star Wars back, Pachter. There will be plenty of demand when everyone is suitably hyped up for Episode VII.

Those are the same terms he described the Wii in when he said it was a fad. Mere time passing doesn't make something less appealing.

I agree with him in the second half of his statement, but what is up with the first half? There are plenty of relatively young Star Wars nerds, did Pachter miss Episode I, II and III? Contrary to popular opinion on the internet these movies were generally well-liked and a huge financial success. Also, the Star Wars nerds introduced their sons into the series. At least my parents and the parents of most people I know did...

My nephews, six and three, have just recently seen all the Star Wars movies and are very enthusiastic about everything Star Wars now. And they even prefer the old trilogy.

Patcher doesn't know what he's talking about, Star Wars creates a large number of new fans every day and will do so forever. The older Star Wars nerds sure are the more vocal bunch, though.

Who is this Patcher guy? Everything he writes is so silly.

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

Not sure what Pachter is even trying to say this time, Star Wars is one of those IP's that has young and old fans, and will as long as it exists.

All it has lacked in recent years is quality in it's gaming side.

A quality game released during the new movies release could do 5M+.

Considering Disney is making 5 new Star Wars films, plus one assumes Tv shows/cartoons, etc. I think it's fairly safe to assume there will be huge demand for Star Wars games to go with them.

Launch a Star Wars game near a movie launch and its golden. The problem is they need to make sure its good. Now that EA is involved, they've got Bioware, Visceral and Dice whom are probably going to be involved in a major game. Thats going to be huge and expansive and very demanding.

KOTOR sold 7 million copies? No way.
