Forums - Gaming - Gamer elitists, why do these people dump on other genres and their fans, like shooters or kinect titles? Where does it come from? What do they gain?

Guger sure is strawmanning.

Few people like going from a majority to a minority in any culture. I accept it, not thrilled because I selfishly want the industry to cater to my desires, but how life goes.

Shooters get bashed by those people who mostly play jrpg:s/platformers and such. They don't like a game which they have to compete against real people, since it reminds them of their childhood. Oh those nasty schoolyard games.

I'd assumed it was because both of these are popular and appear to be a major driving force in the industry but they aren't a direction that those gamers like/agree with.  Hell I'm pretty bored with shooters and it's unfortunate that they seem to be the majority of games moving forward, and I dislike Kinect just as much as I dislike Wii and Move motion controls because it's just not the type of gaming I like, and it's unfortunate to see the industry moving towards those as well.

But hey, maybe you're right, maybe it's because we're all nerds and were bullied in school.  I know I was, but then I kinda thought most people who love something like gaming since childhood were a bit nerdy.  Kinda sad that now the nerdy pastime is being taken up by people like you so I can't assume comradery with every person I meet with the same love of gaming.

TLDR: 1. Don't want industry to move towards shooters and motion gaming as a whole.

2. you suck.

I did not say that someone is a nerd. I could have as well said that the jrpg gamers were the bullies and they have cured from that and do not want to be reminded of their nasty past.

I guess that your second short point is not ok to reply with the same tone. That is just rude.

Wow, when did gaming become a platform that mandates skill? Why does it matter if people like to play a shooter that requires little skill, or they just want to jump around in front of their TV? Is being more "skillful" at a game earning you money, making you do better in your studies or bringing food to the table for your family? If not then why exactly is it suddenly a must for you to HAVE to become skillful in a video game? When did it become a requirement for everyone to have to play every single genre available in the market to label themselves as a "true" gamer?

In fact, who the heck even cares if you are a "gamer" or not? At the end of the day gaming is just something we do for fun. If you are having fun playing games, that is all that matters and nothing else. If that means you have fun shooting your friends in a virtual playground, then great, you are doing it right.

It's ridiculous how some people make gaming out to be some kind of activity that defines your entire life and some kind of advancement of mankind requiring an elite outlook.

I don't think popularity in itself is a reason many people hate on certain products. Sure, people hate on Bieber songs and Twilight and Call of Duty and they are all popular, but I believe people genuinely believe those things suck. Their popularity just amplifies the amount of times you're going to hear about it. Take something like Game of Thrones or The Dark Knight which were both fairly popular and you'll see that popularity did not cause massive hatred, especially not to the extent of those other products.

Why do people believe motion games and shooters suck so much? I guess because, other than a few exceptions, their success is based largely upon aesthetics and superficial appeals rather than any depth or creativity, similarly to why people probably hate Bieber songs and Twilight - not my opinion, just what I believe other people believe. These people usually use the critic of "educated" critical reviewers to help validate their view. Are these people right? Is the success of many mainstream games the result of superficial aesthetics rather than real, "true" quality? I don't know.

Well, personally I think there are too many fps/tps shooters in the market (retail games) and not enough diversity, but I admit that some of the best gaming time in my life was spent in Counter Strike, so I definitely can see the appeal of a well made competitive shooter.

People who feel the need to attack others for simply liking certain genres or consoles or celebrities or whatever need to learn to accept that other people don't share their interests and let them be.

Because shooters like CoD are driving the industry towards the wrong place and making developers think that more of the same should be the standard, ignoring innovation, experimentation and risk-taking at all cost for the all mighty dollar.

Kinect is just self-explanatory

So who's fault is that? If the gamers want Call of Duty you think Activision is going to cancel its development because other devs can't make anything that's comparable to it?

Kinect Adventures sold 20 million. I don't think those who bought the game cared about graphics or whats hip. I think they went for what gaming is about... fun. Self-explanatory.

Oh clever aren't we? Of course gamers are at fault. We ultimately make trends and fads stick or dissapear. However, you would think with the kind of loyalty MW created, Activision would try something new every once in a while, but they played it safe which as you said its the smart bussiness move. So now we get the yearly CoD release with very little innovation. MW raised the bar for online FPS on console. It truly was a milestone but once the yearly release came out, people kept buying the games like wild, without caring what they were buying. Every new CoD could have been memorable and truly impactful if Activision actually gave a fuck.

That's my opinion,  I am not a fan of yearly releases, it reduces the quality of the franchise to that of a cash cow and it makes every other developer want to mimic that success, thus creating a vicious chain of "playing catch-up" where developers and companies are not interested in taking risk, for trying to take FPS or whatever genre to the next step, with very few finding a market that isn't over saturated in shooters. Let's be real, that's their job, to make money and they will do whatever it takes to make money cause they family to feed and the likes, so I can't blame them.

Kinect sold alot cause of marketing. Microsoft knows marketing like the back of their hands. Kinetic has very VERY few reason to warrant a purchase, unless you mom wants to lose weight or your sister and her friends want to have a dance party. Just like Move, which I bought and now regret, they were on the "motion" control fad. I'm pretty sure many Kinetics are gathering dust as we speak cause kids group real, real fast and moms can only lose so much weight.

It looks as if microsoft wants to make Kinetic a much more suitable device for serious gaming and by serious gaming, I mean used for games that the hardcore audience wants to play, not fucking fruit ninja. That's awesome in my opinion. Kinetic has so much potential but it was grossly wasted this gen and I hope Microsoft makes a sweet new, immersive device to takes gaming to the next level. Until then, it will live off dance games and party games.

I think the correct and obvious connection you grossly missed is that JRPGs and Platforms focus mostly on a robust and well-written story. Shooters have a tendency to have forgetable campaign cause the main drive is the multiplayer action and thus the campaign gamers are notoriously put off by the wash-away campaign and their characters. To each their own.

However, games like my favorite shooter this gen, Spec Ops: The Line prove that any game, even shooters, can have deep and intricate stories and engaging characters and plot lines.
