Forums - Gaming - Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection won’t come to Xbox 360 due to MGS4

It's not just the rendered scenes, it's the coding in general. Seven discs is unlikely, yes, but it would be no less than 3-4.

That didn't prevent this game to be a pretty gem this generation. =P

This makes sense, handling seven disks for MGS4 alone would be a nightmare...

But you could copy all of them on the HDD before starting the game, so the ridiculous between chapter installs would be gone.

Also it would need less than 7 discs. They just calculated a 50GB Blu-Ray - a 8GB 360 disc = 6,25.
This release of MGS4 (anniversary edition) is 30GB, so 3.75 discs would be needed.

Remove some languages and compress video and audio (which is always done anyway) and it would easily fit on 3 discs.

EDIT: But that's okay, it's their decision. If they don't think it would be worth it to port the game then we can't do anything. Though there is at least hope for NextBox.
Though it doesn't bother me since I own the game on PS3.

That's probably what he means by too much work.

OT: MGS 4 has some references that wouldn't make sense on the 360.

Certainly not.

Removing languages takes one second (since it's mostly just one big file or folder containing all audio files that needs to be deleted).
Audio files are pretty much always compressed on 360. It wouldn't take "more" work, just as much as all other multiplat (and first party) developers put into their 360 games.
Also the whole process is not even real work since the computer is doing the work, it's just a bit time consuming.
Same for FMVs (though I don't even remember if they are any in MGS4).

The only "work" that would need to be done (apart from the usual porting stuff) is the rearrangement of the data on the discs.

We both know it doesn't work this way.

for a linear game ? Yes it certainly works that way.
There would be obviously a few files that need to be present on all discs, but those would only need a fraction of the disc.
Granted there might be a weird occasion where one chapter doesn't fully fit on the same disc as another chapter, so it would need to be transferred on the next one.
Either way I said it could fit on 3 disks, but certainly not more than 4.

Lost Odyssey had 4 discs, but only because every disc contained the full world, so there was only a small amount left for the story and FMVs (and I seem to remember that Lost Odyssey had quite a few of them).

What exactly is in MGS4 that would warrant it needing 7 DVDs to do?  Does doing prerendered cut scenes instead of using an ingame engine, mean THAT much space gets taken up?  I played through MGS4 and still wonder about this.

I was curious, because games with much longer playing time to complete on the 360 end up taking up less disks than that.

not a big deal, all future metal gear games will be on xbox consoles anyway.

I'm pretty sure the game was only dubbed in English (and Japanese, but that's a different release) with subtitles in German, French, Spanish and Italian.

I agree it shouldn't take more than 4 DVDs absolute tops though. I guess the game was really uncompressed because I don't think it really warrants using 7 DVDs.

 7 DVDs! damnnn

But nearly all character art, sound, and voice would have to be duplicated on every disc. And not every chapter would fit on the disc, so then you'd have to duplicate the data on that disc as well.

As I said that is the only part that would need some work to figure out.

What voice would be needed on multiple disks for example ? Most of them are unique lines. Exceptions being screams and other 1 or 2 second audio files.
No FMVs (again I'm not sure if the game even has FMVs) would need to be duplicated.
A few sounds yeah
character art too, but again only for the enemies and main characters that actually appear in these chapters.
Then some textures of repeating models in the game environment.

That's not much at all.
And if there is no other way, just split the chapter again at some point.
The game has 5 chapters (with the last one being much shorter), so 1 chapter per disc sounds like it would easily fit (chapter 4+5 being on the 4th disc).

"Act 1 - 9 segments. Middle East - Liquid Sun
Act 2 - 9 segments. South America - Solid Sun
Act 3 - 6 segments. Eastern Europe - Third Sun
Act 4 - 6 segments. Shadow Moses - Twin Suns
Act 5 - 2 segments. Outer Haven - Old Sun"

Seems more likely than trying to fit 5 chapters on 7 discs, which would also need an (at least two) in-act-split(s).

Didnt Selnor bet his house that MGS4 would eventually be on 360?

Why do you think he left? He can't get internet in a carboard box.
