Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo not holding traditional E3 press conference this year?

Nintendo has been incredibly successful... An uninvestable company who's stock has fallen 77%, hovering at $14, their hardware strategy makes no sense, they don't have any presence outside of the console market, they haven't future proofed themselves as a company and their consoles makes either $0 profit or $2.50 depending on whether or not you buy a first party game (which are the only games that actually sell on their hardware)... oh and third parties don't even bother to port their games onto the platform.

Yes, nintendo is clearly "king." Great graphs showing irrelevant information from 10yrs ago that in no way applies to ANYTHING happening now lol. You've accomplished nothing by showing those graphs. Now back to reality.

Well, I can see both sides to the argument. On the one side, it's better for us gamers because all the info will be about the games as opposed to the presentation, and they know they can't go up against the new console releases (though Someone could easily mess it up). But on the other, E3 is one of the best chances for publicity, and to get the word out in mainstream media. Why wouldn't you show something big?

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Now back to your reality:

Nintendo doomed since 1889 (or whatever year it is they started)

How could you miss those graphs that showed 2012 data? And considering Sony had to sell 2 (TWO) of their HQ's to turn a profit this year, I wouldn't say they're in the best of shapes either. What division is making them money? And don't forget that their credit is almost worthless.... The only company out of these are MS, and it's not because of the Xbox brand... The only console maker actually making money from games are in fact Nintendo. They've had ONW (1) year where they lost cash... Not saying they're "king", just saying they're making money

I am not sure what exactly I am commenting on, but no conventional E3 presentation can only be a good idea at this point in time. Overall, E3 got worse each year. And while E3 is one of the few chances where the mainstream media are paying attention to video games, the actual product launches are still far more important. The general population might see news about E3, but it's rare that anyone buys video game systems in anticipation.

But isn't that weird though? How is it even possible to make a bad e3? It should be soooo easy to do a good one! Just take a que from 2004 and the revelation of Zelda TP... Just try to aim for that kind of thing.

I posted this another forum, but i`ll post it here aswell.

I can`t believe Nintendo did this.
If their fan presentation of the games and other news is another ND, they just made another big mistake.
As much as i like NDs, they can´t begin to compare to E3. The best way to describe is, to me, like going to see a movie. You are there with everyone, watching it with everyone and all laughing. And now, you will be watching it at home, alone.

E3 was a once in a year event that no matter how bad it went, it was always fun to watch and hear people`s reactions - even Nintendo`s executives reactions. Now all that`s gone.

Exactly! I was planning to watch all the major events with my bro on the TV, but it looks like we'll only watch MS and Sony now...

It's painful watching this company exist lol. It's so obvious they can't compete, they can't advertise, and they can't even plan a strategic reveal to counter their opposition. Reminds me of the Toshiba HD-DVD press conference being canceled last minute, right before they officially halted all production of HD-DVD drives.

Nintendo's stock has fallen lower than Sony's at this point. This news is negative, just like the stream of negativity surrounding everything nintendo does. The only way nintendo is going to make any real profit at this point is by going software only. Best business decision they will ever make. I'll give them 10yrs until they finally realize they're wasting their time in hardware.

It really has become the "Big 2." Sony & Microsoft.

While Nintendo is clueless about marketing/presentation/image, they've made more money than Sony in the game business every year since Sony entered the business except for like once I believe (1997). Some one had that chart, it was pretty crazy, neither Sony or MS really make all that much money from the game business.

Apparently, you weren't around when Sony dominated with the PS1 and PS2? Sony made more money than them for several years in the gaming business. Gameboy and Pokemon sales still weren't even close to have Nintendo make more money during Sony's period of dominating the industry.

Good one you should be a comedian.

Well you do know that  Nintendo made games back then? Most of sony's studios right now were bought after releasing 1 average title for the PS3 because Sony desperately wanted new IP.  They were not around in the PS2 or PS1 era. (insomniac etc is NOT sony)

So Nintendo didnt just make money with  consoles and handhelds and third party games (a few sure bit still) but they made a ton of money with their own IP where like 80% of the 50/40 dollars you had to pay went directly to Nintendo.

Sony on the other hand had not alot of  own (successful) games and not every PS2 owner  etc bought the system to play games.  My sister bought the PS1 as a music player because it had the nice visualization stuff and then she bought some games later on.

Plus sony always has alot to compensate because their RnD costs are freaking massive and their consoles dont always make a profit from day1.

I mean just think about it the Gameboy and Gameboy pocket and even the Gameboy Color which is basically a standard Gameboy with color screen and overclocked cpu have sold like 120 million units.  And the tech was even "ancient" when it came out in 1989. So every system made Nintendo a profit and the thing even sold after the GBA (which also sold like 81 million units) was out which also made Nintendo buckloads of money from day one!

You can guess how much money nintendo made by selling something thats basically a calculator for hundreds of dollars right?

I think this is a big mistake namely for a number of reasons. First. Nintendo relying on Nintendo Direct is like preaching to the converted. I've been on the fence about getting a Wii U since my Wii went so unused these past 6 years, I was hoping Nintendo would have brought their A Game to this years E3 to convince me to buy a console. But seems they don't care for my money.

2 they give up a lot of press for this. It's not just the gaming media that reports on E3, almost ever major publication does and with this being the first time Next-Gen consoles are going to be shown...its an even bigger mistake for Nintendo to sit this out. In a way Im happy Nintendo was abandoned by the causals....I always think hardware should be made with the Hardcore in mind and worry about casuals later. They're the late adopters its the early adopters that keep your console afloat

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

So what else do you remember from E3 2004? Most likely absolutely nothing. What effect did Nintendo's presentation have on GameCube sales? Pretty much none as the console continued its slide into irrelevance. Which raises the questions what constitutes a good E3 and if 2004 was a good one like you said.

I haven't seen the whole 2004 actually, and I only said they should "take a que from 2004 and the revelation of Zelda TP"; meaning that they should always drop some sort of megaton for fans to enjoy. Surprise us in a good way.

This is actually not such a bad idea: http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/04/24/how-we-want-to-remember-nintendos-last-e3 It would have made a much better presentation.
