Really, I played the game 3 times (the first time I finished the game without discovering the flying cap!) but always got really scared getting near him. I think I had a few nightmares about him too :/

wait, you cant finish the game without the flying cap?....right? i remember i was afraid of him too, but then i just figured him out. i cant say how many times i played the game, i finished it atleast once. probably twice, but i started the game over a billion times. some times reaching the last levels sometimes just the first few

yes, that moment, that one above. for me, one of the most magical moments (if not the most) in my gaming history. see for many just like me, taking those first steps in super mario 64 are was the first time i experienced 3D gaming, and wow was i amazed! i could run around in ANY direction! climb trees and jump anywhere i want from on top! i could run in circles or swim in the water in any direction! i know it seems silly now, but it wasnt 16 years ago when i played the game for the first time.

this moment is for many, a new beginning in gaming. it was start of one of the most amazing adventures i ever had. worlds around me were alive in a way i never new before. and it all just felt so natural, so fluid, so simple. yet it was so complex, so mysterious. In my opinion that moment changed gaming forever, it created a path for so many wonderful moments in 3D gaming to be born, whether it was on a nintendo, playstation, xbox or sega console. that moment changed gaming for ever. 

i know the playstation came out before the the nintendo 64. but to me this is just a magical moment that nothing on the original playstation could beat. the genius behind this game showed us how 3D worlds can be explored. its just a moment that i will never forget, and a moment that i will always be greatful for my dad because he bought me my nintendo 64 and the amazing supermario 64.

btw i added this in the gaming discussion forum because i feel this moment in mario 64 has effected gaming as a whole, not just nintendo. so i feel it should be placed in the gaming forum.

this game showed me what a game can do. I was totally amazed as a 4 year old back then. It made a gamer out of me. This game will be in my heart forever. One of the greatest games of all time.

And, indeed, the most magical moment in gaming history. Mario 64 is probably one of the most revolutionairy games ever made and it still looks and plays perfectly to this day. And it's 17 years old! They really got it right with this game. It's still my #3 best game of all time. The N64 is just amazing anyway, most of it's games are the best in their genre; Mario 64 and Banjo for platformers, Ocarina for adventure, Mario Kart 64 for racers, GoldenEye for shooters, Star Fox 64 for rail-shooters, Shadows of the Empire and the list goes on and on. I wish I could time-travel back to the 5th gen (as the PS1 and the GameBoy Color were also very awesome).

I was impressed with the N64 mostly for polish and great controls. However, it paled in comparison to how the Dreamcast made me feel. The Dreamcast really felt like the future of gaming.

Oh yeah. I actually got to play it before it launched here in the US.

My friends and I drove to the nearest town that had a Diehard game store (not sure if they're even still around) just to play the import N64 display unit they had. I think it was about $10 to play it for half an hour but the guy working there was cool and let us play longer. We were absoutely floored when we first laid eyes on how fluid and flawless the 3D world in Mario 64 was compared to the Playstation and Saturn we'd been playing for months. They had Pilotwings too but we didn't waste a second playing that, lol.

Ah, good times.

No, you can finish the game without it, but you won't get all the stars. I think I had 113/121 stars without the flying cap. 

Yeah, after reading this, I really want to start playing it again :( .
