Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo should pay off third parties to get multiplatform games on their console

Too expensive.

Nintendo would be better off just financing indie devs and grabbing 10-12 exclusive smaller indie games. It would help fill in gaps for release droughts too. And the games would probably be more unique.

They should however get over their ridiculous bias against Western devs and at least work with some Western studios on exclusive projects. They work with devs like Platinum, Treasure (Sin & Punishment), Mistwalker (Last Story), but have cut off all ties to Western devs other than letting a few of them work on things like Luigi's Mansion (existing Nintendo IP).

It's time Nintendo picked 2-3 Western studios and let them make original games specific for the 3DS/Wii U. It's actually really a stinging indicment against Iwata that this hasn't already taken place. The Wii U right from the moment the first dev kits were sent out 2 years ago should've had a Nintendo-financed AAA Western show case title fast tracked for development (something on the scale of a Halo or Zelda game).

Nintendo needs to start doing this soon. Otherwise they will be left in the dust before too long, because it's inevitable that third parties will shift their focus to the PS4 and Nextbox. It's sad that it has come to this, that Nintendo has to pay for what other console manufacturers get for free, but it's the reality.

Now someone might ask if third parties have any sort of leverage when Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Assassin's Creed III and FIFA 13 (some of the biggest third party IPs in the industry) have fallen flat and failed to move Wii U hardware. That is a good question.

BO2 released one week later on Wii U. AC 3 - no sane company can expect AC 3 selling crazy. First AC game on a nintendo console. FIFA 13 was a lazy fifa 12.5

They need another Retro.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie  Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)

Why should Nintendo pay to get the same game as the competition?

Rumours are saying thar Shin'en is working on F-Zero or atleast a racing game for Wii u. wouldn't mind it at all.

This is part of Nintendo's problem, Western devs to them are basically only good for working on franchises they're too busy to handle themselves.

Nintendo doesn't understand the concept of new IPs, honestly, lol. Let these developers work on something new, maybe (just maybe) one of them will make the next Minecraft or Angry Birds or Plants Vs. Zombies.

That's the point of embracing indie development is that hopefully you can find interesting new ideas you wouldn't otherwise. Not to have them take on 20 year old franchises. EAD can make an F-Zero game just fine.

^^this

also nintendo should create small studios for smaller games

They did... with the Gamecube. Their biggest flop.

IMO they should expand paying 3rd party devs for making EXCLUSIVE content on their console. Didn't work out too bad for ZombiU, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Lego City Undercover. They just need to pay more dev teams to secure steady releases.

I completely agree. Nintendo should start sucking up to 3rd parties like everyone else does, and if paying extra is the answer then they should do it.

What I'm wondering though is, do enough Wii U owners care about 3rd parties to justify that move? And will doing that attract enough new users?
