Forums - Gaming - How smart do you want a gaming A.I. to be?

Easy question. i hear a lot of complaints about stupid AI in games, but isn't that part of the fun? Wouldn't a really smart AI make a game frustrating?

So, how smart do you want a gaming AI to be? what do you expect your enemies to do? when would it be too smart to be fun?

What games have had the best AI so far in your opinion, and what could have been improved in your favorite games AI!

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

i feel like there has to be an "optimal" kill/death ratio for fun. too many kills and i'm bored from lack of challenge. to many deaths and i'm too frustrated to progress. also, if I find an "exploit" for killing something i let myself get in a rut reusing the same methodology over and over and over again making the gameplay repetitive.

maybe it's just me but when I think of a better AI i think of a sliding scales that automatically adjusts to my play style to prevent me from being repetitive and adjusts the challenge to my skillz to maximize fun.

i want that, standard.

Don't confuse smart AI with skilled AI. I want my AI to be smart enough to get scared by me and trip as they run away.

best AI? probably this game:

As smart as Alakazam or Metagross

I just want non-exploitable AI in terms of enemy AI.

I laughed. That's really horrible.

Civilization is a very good example of AI stagnation. The only thing that makes the AI better when increasing the difficulty level is that the computer starts with more units, settlers, trade more freely with each other, and develop techs faster. Basically it is just given an unfair advantage. You would think they wouldn't have to resort to such cheap tactics considering Civ is a TBS game and produced for the PC. So extra RAM hasn't done shit for the AI in the Civ series since I started playing Civ3-Civ5.

I like dumb AI! MGS1 was so much fun because of it. You could beat a guy senseless, hide in a box right at his feet, wait around until he'd wake up, he'd say "Uh, just a box!", return on his patrol, then you'd get out of the box and kick his ass once again.

Signature goes here!

It's not about smart AI, but believable AI. You can have super human AI like in the original Far Cry, but their super human vision and impeccable aim just gets annoying.

AI needs to be smart enough to be challenging, but also respond in the flawed ways humans do (e.g. holding grudges, experimenting with different methods, actually learning new techniques as it goes etc.). That's where AI needs to be moving now... unless the enemy is literally meant to be a highly sophisticated Terminator...
