Forums - PC - Getting a Gaming Laptop. What should I look for?

Currently being typed on a 6 year old laptop that can't run SC2 on low W/O framerate issues.

I've been saving up a good amount of $$ for the last couple months or so and I have decided it's time to get myself a decent gaming laptop.

My budget is around an upwards of $1500. Now I know nothing about computers or specs in general so I need a little help. What kind of things should I be looking for?

These 2 are pretty beast, and not quite 1500 so you'll have some extra cash for accessories and games.

Both should max out SC2, maybe you'd have to play on high instead of ultra for 60fps.

Are you sure you need a laptop though? A desktop, especially with that kind of money, will get much better specs, last longer, and won't need to be replaced in a few years, just updated.

I kinda agree with this.. heck you could even build a great desktop for a 1000 and get a new laptop for 500 for the basic needs..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Oh. Well I want a laptop because I'd like to finally be able to use Dolphin and hook it up to the TV.

Also I'm bit of a LAN gamer and I'd like it to be portable. Not really worried about updating because I plan to use it for another good 7-8 years. As long it can run future PC games at medium or so I should be fine.

A $500 AMD APU based laptop should run StarCraft 2 no worries, it's not exactly the most demanding game especially at a console-like 720P resolution.
StarCraft 2 loves CPU grunt though, especially on 2 cores.

This should do fine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312434

Then spend that $1000 on a decent gaming Desktop, save your money over time as Desktop upgrades are generally cheaper. :)

In that case, how about a HTPC or a custom built mini ITX PC? They are much smaller than your average PC, more portable, fairly customisable and considerably cheaper than buying a gaming laptop. You can also plug it into your TV and play your games like that.

heres is my HTTPC specs laid out at the top of this forum post. You can get powerfull custom built under TV PCs which are very portable due to sizes.  It will be much cheaper than a laptop probably have a better GPU & CPU, you have the option to upgrade and theres nothing worse than having youropen laptop in front of your TV and playing games of it, the laptop screen is completely redundant.

You can get custom built mini-PCs or you can buy samll cases that lay flat, look good and can be just abit bigger than the size of an early PS3.

Ive had mine years now, its perfect for under TV gaming or taking it round a friends house. And add to that a couple of X360 pads a small bluetooth mouse which i use on the couch and a mini-keyboard im all set.

Here is a site (uk based) that makes custom built under TV gaming PCs, im sure the USA will have something similar.

That list does need updating.
Asus released a Geforce GTX 670 small-form factor card, granted it's stupidly expensive and probably costs as much as most HTPC's, but for no-holds barred performance it puts the Radeon 7750 to shame. :)

thanks will have a look at that 670 gtx.  The list only considers low profile, where the back bracket is half size a normal back panel bracket so it can fit into smaller cases.
