Forums - Gaming - Should Microsoft give up in Japan?

No.

The 360 sold 3x as good as the original X-Box in Japan, and while 1.5 million isn't much, PS3 only got 8 million. If MS grows, even just by 50% that's still 2.25 million units it wouldn't have sold otherwise.

Plus Microsoft has big pockets and will publish games Sony and Nintendo might not (or at least they won't pay as much). This is why we saw games like Lost Odyssey, Shenmue 2 (localized), and Panzer Dragoon Orta.

Plus competition from MS, however small it is, will encourage Sony to make better JRPG's.

So I see no reason why MS should leave. They might not be making much profit, but it does add a couple million sales in Japan, and maybe even a million extra sales outside of Japan from people who have to have all JRPG's.

9.2 million PS3s in Japan and counting and by mid 2014 will have eclipsed the Wii and be the most successful 7th gen console in that territory. Nothing to sneeze at. Yeah, the PS2 sold 2x that figure but hey, not all consoles can have the market for themselves like the PS2, PSone, NES and SNES pretty much did in Japan.

I may come off as trolling, but I really am not when I say this. YES don't even bother with Japan. Japanese gamers don't care about wasting money on online when other services provide better and for FREE. There is no diversity in the 360's catalog/library of games im sorry for anyone who does not want to read this, but it's a fact. There's a reason why it's basically dead in Japan and Europe is dominated by PS3.

Agree, in fact, MS had huge success with XBOX360 because of America and american patriotism in first place, give americans a half decent product with a american white stripes flag on the top and they will buy it in seconds.

That said, KINECKT DID succeed with the casual audience, which I thought was a brilliant move from MS bussiness wyse, althought I hate KINECKT and casual gaming in general.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

The article the OP is discussing already had at least one if not two threads on here and the figures they used were incorrect as they seemed to estimate the original Xbox figures at 2 million instead of the actual 0.5 million they sold. As such the premise that the original Xbox sold more is completely false and thus the market share for Microsoft in Japan has increased this gen.

I happen to think that the Japanese game developers are not really worth investing in like they once were and the money Microsoft spent on Japan this generation would be better spent focusing on Europe where they could make serious inroads.

PS3 is never going to surpass Wii in Japan.

And yea, competition is a good thing. 360 isn't much competition, but it's something, and it's more direct then Nintendo to Sony. I don't think MS should give up, but they should release Japanese style content regularly, not like on 360 where we had a bunch and then nothing. Maybe they could try to produce games which appeal to both Japanese and Western gamers, much like Forza appeals to Europeaners and Westerners.

Wii is at 12.7 million, that's 3.5 million ahead of PS3, and yes PS3 is doing okay ATM, but as soon as PS4 releases, people are going to stop buying PS3's like they did with the DS.

P.S. I know PSP is doing okay, but compared to before it's sales are crap. Plus Vita took a long time to get a price cut and people were still making PSP software in Japan.

Someone brought that up already. I got the Xbox sales originally from IGN, after I posted I double checked and they were wrong. My bad.

Most Americans are stupid when it comes to buying things.

They made strides with the 360. In addition, the new Kinect supposedly has no motor and a much wider angle, making it less space consuming.

Some genres like old-school shmups are owned by the 360 in Japan. In addition, it has a loyal following for visual novels and gamers who like Western-style games.

Mega stores like Bic Camera and Yodobashi Camera still have sizeable 360 sections, so it must be selling enough. Essentially every single local game store also carries it to varying degrees.

There is a also a decent-sized import scene where stores like Sofmap carry lots of European and US 360 titles.

I see no reason why they shouldn't release it.

Thank you for some genuin perspective.

Plus, it is hard to repect the author of the original IGN article.  They claim the 360 didn't sell as well as the Xbox.  Accourding to our VGC numbers, the X360 as sold *over three times* what the orginal Xbox sold.  So while it is still low, it is a big improvement.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

On the most recent Game Scoop on IGN they brought up the fact Xbox as a brand hasn't been able to get a foot hold in Japan. The 360 as it is now will sell less than the original Xbox over there. So after 10 years should they give up or keep trying? What do you guys/girls think?

What?

Xbox 360 = 1.64m
Xbox = 0.53m

They TRIPLED the sales this gen. I think the Xbox brand can only keep growing. It already has a decent-sized niche fanbase. NO, MICROSOFT SHOULDN'T GIVE UP ON JAPAN.
