Ubisoft once stated it cost about $1.2 million to port a game to Wii U.    That means to obtain a ROI, they'd need to sell about 55,000 units.

To port an engine may cost the same so your first game would need to double that return or be amortized across all games the company intends to develop on Wii U.

You would have to link the article. Even then, it sounds to vague. We have no idea what games would be in question, actual development costs, time constraints. Too many factors. "Ubisoft once said" is too vague of a statement.

Given the wiiu's lack of hardware, I wouldn't doubt that it would be beneficial to port shovelware onto the system. Much like the wii. But I'm having a hard time believing quality, AAA titles will be getting the same treatement, if even appearing on the wiiu. The devs and publishers, very early on, are making it known that they just don't have alot of confidence in the wiiu. I agree with their position, from an artistic perspective. But if the money is there, you'll see the games.

Sales are so low as of right now that it's just not something to call one way or another. Although you can speculate, as of now, that thing aren't looking good. It's the narrative and attitude that's being formed amongst the developers, publishers and consumer community in regard to this wiiu.

Actually, the game was ACIII.  What shovelware has Ubisoft ported from the HD consoles to the Wii U anyway?   The only thing they've ported so far was ACIII and Marvel Avengers.

As for the story, I'm surprised you've not heard of this already.

So around 50k sales for ports breaks even for Ubisoft?  Dam.

That article doesn't support anything you're claiming, nor does it disprove what I've said lol. It actually proved ME right.

Article refers to last gen games being ported onto wiiu - hence the lower costs, specifics not given for next-gen at all - My point

Article clearly states new games are more expensive - My point.

Ubisoft only released two new games, both cost more to make, and one was delayed due to poor hardware sales and is now a multiplat to recoup investment. I'm struggling to understand why you're responding to my comments, as if you've proven a point... You still have no idea how much an UE4 title would need to break even, no idea of the development cost, no idea if ALL UE4 titles available on PS4/Xbax987 will be available on wiiu.

What are you even arguing at this point?

Directly supporting WiiU defeats the point of developing UE4 for higher end systems, leading me back to my point that they have, and still support, UE3 for that very reason, for mid range PC, PS3, 360 and now, WiiU.

I have to say that everything you have written in this thread has been very interesting and informative. I would like to just be clear on one point. If a developer wants to make a game across all 3 platforms would they:

a) Use UE4 to make it for PS4 and Nextbox, then port assets to UE3 for Wii U?

b) Use UE3 for all three?

c) Use UE4 for all three?

d) Use an entirely different engine?

I would be interested to see how all these choices would rank from a developer perspective.

You do know that one of the reasons UE4 was developed is to reduce the cost of game development, don't you?   With that in mind, if development costs of UE4 based games are relatively equal to today's UE3 based games, then a comparison to current ports is still relevant.  So I do have an idea of how much a port of a UE4 based game would need to break even, I do have an idea of a UE4 based game's development costs  and whether they will get ported is irrelevant to what you and I are debating.

What I'm debating is exactly what I quoted of you above.  I figured that was obvious given I bolded that specific aspect of your post and spoke very specifically about my point in my reply.

You don't have any proof to back up anything you say lol. You can't give me a single quote detailing production costs because you don't have any. THAT would be the obvious. The article you linked did nothing to support your claim, it actually proved ME right. At this point you're just dragging this entire thread into a ditch.

Some UE4 games may not be released on wiiu -- I would think that is the situation nintendo will be facing, considering what EPIC said about direct wiiu support. Other than that, this conversation is irrelevant lol.

They would go with A, importing assets to UE3 then recompiling kismet to support it and adjusting shaders, takes less time and money than porting an entire engine.

Thanks. In that case, regarding the OP, I don't see the Wii U getting very many ports at all from PS4 and Nextbox this generation. Certainly not given how third party sales have been going so far.

The amount of logical fail and sheer ignorance about what a game engine actually is in this thread is funny and sad at the same time. Epic has already confirmed that UE4 games can be ported to WiiU if a developer would like.

WiU has a small install base because it's a new system and has had few 'system-sellers'. Attach rates are actually comparable to PS360. Once the install base grows a bit, overall sales will improve for new games.
