Better than last week, but really it is all a massive set up for next week...when the Rains of Castamere fall.

All the pieces are in place.  I am going to love reading this thread in a week.

This episode was better written (was written by George Raymond Richard Martin himself) but I think some of the changes meant he had to work with those.  Theon really needs a break as the torture scenes were only ever alluded to, never shown in such graphic detail.  I guess they really want you to know the fear of Ramsay.

Man, every episode I end up like Jaime more and more. At this rate he might match tyrion.

Jaime and Brienne have been the stars of the season for me.

Martin has minimal input on the show, he writes a script for one episode a season.  The writers have created characters, substituted and completely changed characters.  Much of this is to simplify or remove subtlety as many viewers are already lost by massive cast.

I get the complaints as a fellow book fan, but knew from the beggining that it would not be identical.  I take the show as  aunique entity, and one I've been pleased with 90% of the time.  I am grateful every day the dozens of pitched film ideas did not take and Martin at least gets 10-20 hours for a book instead of 30 minutes.  Is it perfect? Not at all.  Do I still enjoy it? Absolutely. I waited so long to see Westeros come to life and accept the compromises within it.

Jeyne Westerling never left much of an impression on me.  I think they wanted a character with more screen time and felt see simply was not that interesting.  I think they wanted a different dynamic for that relationship.  Do I like it? It's okay, but again I never had attachment to the book relationship.

The sex scenes, which I agree border on parody at times are there because its HBO and those scenes appeal to segment of viewers. I am not among them, but I have heard enough how non book fans enjoy it so it is there.  

The whole Theon torture scenes could easily be cut entirely and has been a matter of great discussion within the book community.  I think they have spent way too much time with it.  Seemingly they don't want show viewers to forget about the character.

I just go by what Martin has stated in interviews, that given his background in TV he fully expected compromise in his vision.  Weiss and Benioff steer the ship of the show, Martin is in more of a consulting role and gets his one episode to write.  Oddly the things you complain about were all on display in his episode so either he endorses it or feels cornered and works with it.  It felt like he tried to somewhat rework the Ygritte/Jon which was altered pretty severely.

I have heard the endless complaints and some have merit. If it ruins your enjoyment, well, sorry to hear that.  I have had my standards so much over the years seeing countless adaptations utterly butchered.  You know film companies wanted to cut EVERYONE except Dany in a film.  So, with that perspective I see a great cast, some great effects and largely maintained characters and stories.  I waited too long for this and am focusing on the positive like "Kissed by Fire" instead of the odd choices to service the tv only audience (which is much bigger than us old book readers).

You show me a model adaptation of an epic fantasy and I'll show you throngs of fans who hate any or all deviations.  You can call this a bullcrap excuse, I'm just saying I fully expected this to be awful years ago when idea was in infancy so what I've got has been pleasant surprise.  The show is good, and I'd argue one of the best on television right now, even with its flaws.
