Forums - Sony - Okay. My PS3 died.

I didn't want to be one of those guys that makes a thread but I have some questions.  Anyway, when I was doing some research on the mating habits of the female species of the homo-sapien, my PS3's browser froze up.  I turned the console off.  It never worked again.  Now, I just get a flashing red light.

This REALLY sucks because I gave away my PS2 since my 80GB PS3 (MGS4 Bundle) was backwards compatible.  I guess I'll order a slim PS3 online or something.  Anyway:

-Will my digital purchases be available on the new PS3?  I bought a LOT of digital games over the years.  Even if I don't play them, I still want to have access to them.  Is it going to work?

-Will my movies still be there?  I want to know because, in the past, I found out that you can only download movies from the PSN once.  You can copy them or whatever but once you delete them, they're gone forever.  Some copyright thing, I guess.  I had a lot of movies backed up on my portable HDD but there were still a few on the PS3.  The Hunger Games, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and The Avengers come to mind.  Are they gone forever?

-Can I recover my game saves?  It took me like three years to finally finish Valkyria Chronicles.  I was in the middle of a playthrough for Dead Space 2 so that I could buy Dead Space 3 (yeah, I hear it sucks.  Shut up.).  If I still have the HDD from the 80GB, is there a way to copy saves to the new PS3?

-Why do things we love have to die?  I loved you, PS3.  I loved you!  Why did you have to leave me so soon?  WHY!?

It's funny.  I got my PS3 at the midnight launch of Metal Gear Solid 4 (heck, it was the MGS4 PS3 bundle).  The game in the PS3 when it died was Metal Gear Rising.  Metal Gear was the first and last series that PS3 ever knew.

Rest in peace, my friend.  You served me well.

Research what the problem represents. If it's a laser you can easily fix it for like 60 bucks.

You can swap out the hard drive... that should fix your concerns right?

Digital purchases are still there. No idea about movies. You're saves are gone unless you had PS+ and backed them up to the cloud.

Sorry man. And if it's any comfort, yes you can redownload anything you've purchased on the store when you get a new PS3.

lol it's gonna take you a while though :D

All your digital purchases can be redownloaded

For some reason, you PS3's HDD is attached to that PS3, so you can't just slot it in another to get stuff off it....

So the best bet is to do more research into the problem to see if you can get it working, at the very least temporarily to get things off it

Games are safe, movies SHOULD be safe (and if they're not, that's rediculous). As for save game files, if you had PS+ and backed them up to the cloud then you should be good, but the only other way to get them back is to pull out the hard drive and put it in another PS3.

EDIT: Ok, swapping hard drives might not be as simple as I thought. You might want to ask others about that.

fail.. I can't to seem to make a joke about the mating habits of the female species of the homo-sapien... should be so easy..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

You can authorize your digital GAME downloads on up to 3 PS3s, IIRC. And you MAY be able to remove systems from the authorized list, too.

Check out your problem online. Red light doesn't mean a hardware failure (Like a yellow light). You can deactivate your PS3 remotely via Sony's website so you don't have to worry about your games and you can download them as many times as you want. Not sure about your movies, maybe they changed their policies?

Died from neglect. I'm calling console protective services right now.
