Is Dota 2 still invitation only?

For the most part yes, although you can get a beta invite extremely easy. And now they are selling some early access that also includes some ingame items, but I don't thing it's worth it.

All I would need to replicate the Steambox is a long HDMI cable and a controller.

Because you said something funny and I don't even know what Dota 2 is exactly.

And you taunted me with lack of gaming knowledge.

Why buy a Steambox when you have a perfectly good PC that is only an HDMI cable away from being a Steambox?

I think I watched a DOTA gaming event at SXSW Gaming Expo and it looked incredibly boring. I believe they were playing the game because I couldn't really pinpoint any other game they would be playing. They had a crowd watching and it took up half the convention. Highly non impressed.  SC/Warcraft or whatever the fuck mod might appeal to some people but it isn't anything special to me.  I was almost actually embarrassed to be gamer at this convention.  The only thing that saved it was some hot sluts dressed up in some video game characters.

You dislike dota and find it boring because you think you saw it being played and didn't understand what was going on? And that made you feel embarrassed to be a gamer until you saw some sluts dressed up in cosplay? And that made you feel better?

Whoa.

Anyways, the game you most likely saw was "League of Legends," a different title. It was part of the IPL tournament.

I don't know what to say to you Seth. I really respect you (as far as online personalities go), but you're wrong here.

Just plain wrong.

I can't explain why. I can just give you a glimpse of what dota is by referencing some of the people who play it.

1. My friend who's master architect of the biggest online purchasing company in my country has clocked over 1200 hours.

2. My friend who's a game developer has clocked over 1100 hours. He's releasing a game at the end of the year and will make millions. Bet on it.

3. His whole dev studio are all into it.

4. Me. I didn't like it at first. But then I watched him play whilst he expertly gave me the lowdown on what he was doing. SO confusing at first, but BY FAR the deepest, most balanced game I ever witnessed.

I had biases too. I refused to accept it as being something possibly awesome. I was wrong.

Yea, whatever it was it was lame.  There was a crowd cheering them on though...

It's been a while coming.

Just accept it everyone.

Steam is the awesomest thing. Dota2 is the best game ever made. No more running away. No more hiding. Just embrace the change. Some of my friends have clocked THOUSANDS of hours on Dota2. It's the closest thing to a sport ever. No need for much else in gaming.

Sure, I'll get a PS4 for Metal Gear and a few other games.

But Valve has given me everything I actually need in super cheap, super sleek package. If they bring out a console you'll see what a loyal fanbase really is. Of course it won't be a "console", just a pc box. Open sourced and compatible with everything. Oh linux.

Gabe Newell for president. Of the world.

Are you telling me that skilled Dota2 play doesn't revolve entirely around running away and hiding, like in LoL?

A true Dota 2 player can very easily kill you if you run away. Honestly some times the only way to run away from a battle is to teleport....or let your whole team die while you escape.

The awesome thing about it is that Valve will tell you the exact same thing! But the Steambox will be cool because IT IS a pc for your living room. Not closed in any way.

I'm sorry to disappoint you.  I believe wfz pointed out the correct game (League of Legends).  Computer games are fun to play (RTS), etc...  I am more of a TBS fan (turn based strategy).  Watching people play (competitve gaming) never appealed to me.  I should have probably made this disclaimer.

Here is a good scenario for you... Imagine going to a friends house and watching them play Skyrim or Deus Ex for hours while smoking weed.  Sure the weed might make you feel alright but it is incredibly boring watching people play single player games.  Some people might enjoy watching other people play games but it is a complete waste of time to me.  Anything to take out of this is that I hate watching people play video games.

Sorry to go off topic but I see the Steam Box as a niche market.

lololololol

Why are you laughing? PLEASE. Tell me.

Because you said something funny and I don't even know what Dota 2 is exactly.

I know something or other about what DOTA is, and that only makes his claim funnier.

Why do people keep quoting their friends' playtimes, as though that proves anything? Plenty of people have dumped hundreds or thousands of hours into social games like FarmVille and Words With Friends, but that doesn't automatically qualify them for the title "Best Game Ever."
