I knew that it is a game where you click around and that calling it the best game ever made is good for a chuckle. |
At least it isn't as much clicking as Diablo!

A true Dota 2 player can very easily kill you if you run away. Honestly some times the only way to run away from a battle is to teleport....or let your whole team die while you escape. |
That's what I want to hear! LoL players are utterly without honor. The wanton cowardice and shameless ganking displayed in even high ranking matches are half of the reason I don't play the game. I wouldn't be able to contain my rage.
The other half is the fact that I don't think it would be all that fun in 800x600 with low graphics and sub 30fps... It is fun to watch, though!

I'm sorry to disappoint you. I believe wfz pointed out the correct game (League of Legends). Computer games are fun to play (RTS), etc... I am more of a TBS fan (turn based strategy). Watching people play (competitve gaming) never appealed to me. I should have probably made this disclaimer. Here is a good scenario for you... Imagine going to a friends house and watching them play Skyrim or Deus Ex for hours while smoking weed. Sure the weed might make you feel alright but it is incredibly boring watching people play single player games. It is incredibly boring for me to watch people play games. Some people might enjoy watching other people play games but it is a complete waste of time to me. Anything to take out of this is that I hate watching people play video games. Sorry to go off topic but I see the Steam Box as a niche market. |
Not really off topic. I like your reply style.
I get that there are different tastes in gaming. Here are some bullet points to make of what you will:
1) I wasn't serious about the "Steam Console Killer" title. It's just catchy, and I thought that Dota and Steam get waaay too little credit on here for the awesome products they are.
2) Yes, Steam Box will probably etch out a niche market - you're right.
3) I don't accept the Skyrim example as analogous to watching Pros play Dota2. Dota2 requires such incridibly deep decision making ability, reasoning and quick time calculations, that it's a joy to behold for those that understand the mechanics behind it.
Glad we can have this conversation in this vein. SO sick of stupid people. ;)
As long as the weird japanese games and JRPGs don't show up in PC as they show up in consoles, I'll stick to 'em. Steam is awesome, but not console killer in my opinion.

You can pay $30 if your're stupid enough lol |
Better spent there than on 99% of other games that price.

Ganking is still a "problem" in normal Dota 2 gameplays, but with full coordination and some stuff called wards (which let you see where other players are) you can easily predict a ganking and move to safety before it happens.
I haven't played Lol yet so I honestly don't know the main differences between each one, but from what I heard, Dota 2 is less cheap and it's more "hardcore" (probably the reason why some prefer Lol over Dota).

Are you telling me that skilled Dota2 play doesn't revolve entirely around running away and hiding, like in LoL? |
YES!

OR
You could just run Steam on PS4.

Just plain wrong. I can't explain why. I can just give you a glimpse of what dota is by referencing some of the people who play it. 1. My friend who's master architect of the biggest online purchasing company in my country has clocked over 1200 hours. 2. My friend who's a game developer has clocked over 1100 hours. He's releasing a game at the end of the year and will make millions. Bet on it. 3. His whole dev studio are all into it. 4. Me. I didn't like it at first. But then I watched him play whilst he expertly gave me the lowdown on what he was doing. SO confusing at first, but BY FAR the deepest, most balanced game I ever witnessed. I had biases too. I refused to accept it as being something possibly awesome. I was wrong. |
So what? Reminds me of a friend many years ago (who by the way was at Garching at the time - if you're going to CERN you know what I'm talking about) talking about one of his acquaintances who, upon being questioned about the people attending a certain meeting, couldn't find a humbler response than saying that "We were at least 5 geniuses..."
Anyways, the fact that a game is capable of drawing apparently rational people for hundreds of hours does not carry a lot of information about the game itself, although it does convey information about those people. IMHO.
