I think I watched a DOTA gaming event at SXSW Gaming Expo and it looked incredibly boring. I believe they were playing the game because I couldn't really pinpoint any other game they would be playing. They had a crowd watching and it took up half the convention. Highly non impressed.  SC/Warcraft or whatever the fuck mod might appeal to some people but it isn't anything special to me.  I was almost actually embarrassed to be gamer at this convention.  The only thing that saved it was some hot sluts dressed up in some video game characters.

I don't know what to say to you Seth. I really respect you (as far as online personalities go), but you're wrong here.

Just plain wrong.

I can't explain why. I can just give you a glimpse of what dota is by referencing some of the people who play it.

1. My friend who's master architect of the biggest online purchasing company in my country has clocked over 1200 hours.

2. My friend who's a game developer has clocked over 1100 hours. He's releasing a game at the end of the year and will make millions. Bet on it.

3. His whole dev studio are all into it.

4. Me. I didn't like it at first. But then I watched him play whilst he expertly gave me the lowdown on what he was doing. SO confusing at first, but BY FAR the deepest, most balanced game I ever witnessed.

I had biases too. I refused to accept it as being something possibly awesome. I was wrong.

I'm sorry to disappoint you.  I believe wfz pointed out the correct game (League of Legends).  Computer games are fun to play (RTS), etc...  I am more of a TBS fan (turn based strategy).  Watching people play (competitve gaming) never appealed to me.  I should have probably made this disclaimer.

Here is a good scenario for you... Imagine going to a friends house and watching them play Skyrim or Deus Ex for hours while smoking weed.  Sure the weed might make you feel alright but it is incredibly boring watching people play single player games.  Some people might enjoy watching other people play games but it is a complete waste of time to me.  Anything to take out of this is that I hate watching people play video games.

Sorry to go off topic but I see the Steam Box as a niche market.
