the word retard/retarded isn't an insult unless you make it one. Its more of an insult to say disabled people are "retarded".

Hey brah, at least use the definition that is applicable i.e. the noun, not the verb. Same source:

The problem with these terms is there are multiple definitions...and some of them "disparaging". They are related by definition, but not by context. 

"That book is gay/retarded" - obviously the book's sexual preference isn't in question, nor is its mental capacity.

"You are gay/retarded is on the order of: stupid, dumb, idiot, moron, lame, etc" and really has no bearing upon sexuality - not offensive in regard to sexuality.

It's just offensive if you use it that way around actual gay people, just fine outside of that.

Gay meant happy long before it meant homosexual. Gay acutually use to be a common given name for American females. I have a great aunt with the first name Gay and her sister's name is Happy.

Okay, so truth be told, I don't think people with severe mental disabilities would even know they're being insulted.  So I'm not sure it's accurate to say you're offending that group of people, if they're not aware they're being offended.  If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

i definitely have a problem with the term retarded being used as insults to people as now the term is mostly seen as disparaging. sometimes parents would look to have your head if your referred to their child as clinically retarded. we now would have to refer to patients as having an intellectual disability not necessarily a bad thing but it is an annoyance. but i would be lying if i said when i was a kid i never used the term retarded to insult one of my classmates
