the word retard/retarded isn't an insult unless you make it one. Its more of an insult to say disabled people are "retarded".

The problem with these terms is there are multiple definitions...and some of them "disparaging". They are related by definition, but not by context. 

"That book is gay/retarded" - obviously the book's sexual preference isn't in question, nor is its mental capacity.

"You are gay/retarded is on the order of: stupid, dumb, idiot, moron, lame, etc" and really has no bearing upon sexuality - not offensive in regard to sexuality.
