Forums - PC - Bloomberg: Surface sells only 1.5 million units, 400K are Pros

I bought my Surface RT on day one when it was launched in Holland. The next day I brought it to my company and all my colleagues were surprised with this device and said "how fantastic is this device".

But sadly, nobody in my company except me ever heard about Surface. In their mind, the tablet is iPad or Galaxy Tab. I also have one Sony Xperia Tablet S and nobody even knew it before I showed it.

I was in Mediamarkt several times since Surface launched in Holland. Only few people tried them and most of people are standing in the Apple Center.

People don't want to try it and even don't bother give them a try.

It is just too difficult for Microsoft to introduce this device to the consumers. iPad occuppied people's mind and this will last for a long time.

Not only Surface sells poor. Other tablets have the same fate. (I am only talking about 10 inch tablets).

Who cares really?

Windows 8 tablets generic is what really matters. I'd like to see that number by the end of 2013 and 2014.

I suspect that eventually this will be like saying Android is a flop because Google don't sell many phones.

C'mon kowen.. this is the flagship win8 tablet.. you can't deny its not doing well..

The flagship is the pro wich has sold 400k in a month. That's alot of $$$.

Totally wasted opportunity by MS, don't know what their doing, but I think 99% of us fortold the situation playing out like this.

How come "%99" of us don't have 50 billion in cash reserves then? Talking about it over the internet after it has happened and claiming you predicted it, (if you did tough, kudos) doesn't mean MS don't know what they're doing.

I'm not claiming to be a prophet or anything :) I genuinely saw it coming and expect no kudos for it as genuinely thought it was a given in most people's minds. It's easy enough to rubbish my prophetness though, I along with 99% of people thought kinect would be a sales disaster, now look at it.

I just think it was a missed opportunity and should have been released 3-4 years ago, I mean they've been showing surface related concepts for the past 10 years, you know those "visions for the future" type stuff where everyone will have a PC in the living room...oh wait...that's already happened and largely not taken off (got an XBMC setup myself but speaking for the wider public)

If they'd have pulled their finger out instead of producing demo sets of "homes of the future" like they were 10 years ago and actually done something back then, "Surface" could have easily been in homes a few years down the line from then.

Instead we have basically a cynical device that doesn't know what it is, inspired by the prototypes 10 years ago but only really seriously taken to market after seeing the success of the iPad, it's just not on and Surface deserves to die on that point alone. Not cool.

And I have used my Surface RT for some weeks. I must say this device is wonderful. After few updates, the device runs smoothly. And the touch cover is also easy to use. I have writen several reports by using the touch cover and the typing speed is fast. Quite responsive.

I need to say, I don't need the x86 programs because I use Surface as a tablet, not a laptop or PC.

I have found most of apps I need from Windows Store. And all games I played are linked to my Xbox accounts to increase my achievements.

Well, Surface RT is the most proper device for me. Since I have it, I barely touch my Sony tablet and PC.

I swear that most of people here trolling Surface RT may even not see it or try it. Come on, make your opinion after see it, try it or use it.

You make a very good point here, I will confess to not having actually even seen one let alone tried one out. My previous post is made on the basis of what I know from all I've read and I guess I fit into the type of person you describe. My reasons for not being interested are a bit different maybe to others as I remember wishing MS would get on with the "coffee table that works like an iPad"...except the iPad hadn't even been released when this was first shown by Microsoft.

Hence my issue with Surface. You're spot on, iPad has the market (can't stand apple but credit here of course), The point is MS could have beaten Apple to the punch with Surface and released before iPad.

Even now that it's been released, where the hell is it?

It's simply to expensive. We need a surface pro tablet at $500-$600, a tablet with full windows 8 support in the price range of an iPad. Then it would fly off shelves.

$400 million is indeed a lot of revenue but that probably wouldnt cover its R&D and marketing costs. I havnt seen let alone touched one but ive heard its a fantastic device. The system seems to be caught up in the Windows 8 backlash and some are using it as a prime example of microsofts OS failings.

Whatever the case I think microsoft are partly responsible in the way they marketed the device. The adverts in the uk make it seem like a new laptop akin to the Chrome when in fact its a whole lot more. But if it fails I dont think it will affect microsoft to much. Their big enough to survive even if the generic uptake of Windows 8 is low as well; its all lessons learned for the next OS.

I feel really sad for Surface and Zune as I feel sad for PSV. All of them are fantastic devices, but they just cannot gain the attention from consumers.

I just bought my Sony Xperia Z and quite like it. But I am sure that it will be overshadowed by Galaxy S4 and iphone 5(5s or 6).

It is just unfair. Why consumers cannot be smarter? Why they just follow the mouth of world and cannot make their own choice?

MS must be disappointed with those numbers. One would hope to launch better than that, especially with MS marketing budget.

I don't see any hope for RT, it's too little, far too late. It'll never have the app support of iOS, Android and would be lucky to match Blackberry.

My daughter just got a Windows 8 laptop. F#@$ing hated using Win 8. Pain in the ass. Maybe in time I'd warm up to it but based on that experience I'm much more open to learning Apple's or Googles laptop OS now.

The one thing MS has is the ability to cater to hybrid laptop/tablet devices which I think will be popular. But I am waiting for the prices to drop and now for other OS to work on them.

MS was way too late into the market. The best thing they can do now is heavily market this product and hope it sells.

They need to drop the price.

No, it just needs more games.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.
