Forums - General - What technological events/milestones do you expect to occur within your lifetime?

Technology without it's applications is pretty much useless. So my choice is commercially availble fusion power reactors. It's have been 50 years since they say "it's just around the corner", I'm tired of waiting. Results = free energy to everyone (oh, wishful thinking I know).

For OP, I hope in my lifetime we will see human-level AI. That means singularity.
And immortality through uploading your mind-state to a computer and later reapply it to a clone or something.

Thank you for reminding me this is a video game forum lol. Most of these predictions are already happening or still 100s of years away.

For starters we already are doing a manned mission to Mars. 2018, set your calendars.

E=mc^2. That equation is the shortened version for the media or very simple applications and is proven "wrong" countless times since it's incorrectly used. In reality it's E^2=m^2c^4 + p^2c^2 and shows no signs of being incorrect.

We will not be uploading our brains to computers, sorry.

Batteries also just had a huge breakthrough. Super capacitors that fully charge within seconds were just discovered.


In my opinion this century will be dominated by super conductors and quantum computers. Seriously quantum computers are amazing.

Oh and Jesus isn't returning till the next millennium sadly.

While antiobiotic resistant bugs are a practical risk these days, anything that's biological has numerous avenues for potential attack.  In future it is very likely that we will get much better at investigating and categorising such targets in viruses and bacteria and quickly producing drugs to target them.

I don't talk about the future here, we already have antibiotics-resistat bacteria. That was a scenario that was warned about decades ago, but the antibiotics misuse was continued. About the resistant bacteria I read multiple time on german media, a quick search produces this english source:

The articles are all very alarmist (as to expect from mainstream-media), but the point is the bacteria that developed resistance against all used antibiotics that was feared in the last years is now reality. If this concrete bacteria will be a bigger problem is questionable, but other bacteria that already are multiresistant might gain the resistance to the last resort antibiotics in the future too. This is a serious problem and one we cannot deal so easily with. We could have avoided it, if we changed our usage of antibiotics 10-20 years ago.

One can dream.

And I wouldn't completely put uploading your mind-state into the realm of science-fiction, but realistically it will need much more time, so far we are not even understanding very well what happens in the brain.

Also human-level AI might be unlikely in my lifetime, that probably needs around 100 years. But I'm pretty sure it will happen and in historical dimensions in the near future. And it will produce a Singularity, making further predictions difficult.

Near-term:
- Battery tech improvements e.g. efficient piezoelectric power generation for portable devices, biological battery creation etc.
- Functional bionic organs/limbs (a bionic eye has already been approved by FDA)
- Coding and taking advantage of GPU tech becoming significantly easier for general purpose tasks
- Improved understanding of protein folding leading to improved protein design for biopharmaceuticals and nanotech scale components

Medium-term:
- Biological components integrated into circuitry (e.g. Efficient DNA storage)
- Full understanding of protein folding to give better tools for custom protein design (which can lead to using proteins for nano tech or as a scaffold for metal nanotech device production as well as complex therapeutic proteins)
- Implants for patient monitoring to be relatively common
- Manned mission to Mars
- Mapping of the human epigenome; the process of which will in turn lead to new Cancer cures and treatments for genetic diseases
- Bionic limbs and organs to offer superior performance/functionality versus natural equivalents
- Mapping of the human brain (protein expression, epigenetic changes etc.)

Long-term:
- Quantum computing to greatly increase research speed
- Likely after my death but hopefully not: Integration between humans and computer devices (this is really only possible if a lot of the above happen) to give possibility of transferring conscious minds beyond a single physical body.

You miss understood me.  I'm well aware of current struggles with drug resistant strains of bacteria as I actually work in a hospital.  CRE mentioned in the articles, although highly resistant to many antibiotics, is still not actually resistant to all antibiotics.

Nonetheless I took your meaning to be that we could, in the future, have scenarios like we already have but worse  i.e. a strain or strains of bacteria that completely resistant to all antiobiotics. I was simply pointing out that although the bugs can change, so will our ability to fight them.
