Forums - Nintendo - The problematic WiiU concept and how to market it

We all complain about lack of Nintendo advertising but it is not that simple really. WiiU is different in many ways. The Gamepad is revolutionising the way games are played and it is only when someone experiences it that can get the concept.

I invited two old Wii owners to my home to play with the WiiU and only then they were convinced that this is actually "cool". Up to that stage they wouldn't even consider it as a potential buy.

I cannot foresee any succesful advertising that can explain the concept to the masses. It is probably the same as the 3D concept in the 3DS. The only solution is get the friggin' console out there. To every shopping mall every weekend. Let the gamers see it...

Thoughts?

You saying your friends had to play it to believe it was worth buying makes me think that only party aka casual games will help, everyone loves a good party game and people knew the Wii was good for it so all you would need is one decent party game and some ads to back it up and bobs your uncle!

They were both what you would call "core" gamers and it was ZombiU and Batman's Armoured edition and the use of the Gamepad that enlightened them.

Isn't NintendoLand a decent party game (I do not own it)?

Nintendo needs more people to take the risk and purchase the console. Right now the main issue is the weak software lineup. You have a console with 3 worthwhile exclusive and the rest are just ports you can get on other consoles. When the system has a better lineup, not necessarily system sellers, but good games, more people will be willing to invest. Right now nothing differentiates the Wii U, in terms of games, from the ps3 or 360.

Its only going to get harder aswell, I usually get a new console/ handheld every year, this year I was going to get a WiiU because I thought the ps4 wouldn't be announced or released until next year. Now instead of getting a WiiU im going to wait for the ps4 and pick up a WiiU maybe late next year.

Nintendo must be analysing their marketing approach for the relaunch.

It's difficult to explain the assymetrical concept in a flash, or a 20/30 second Ad. It can be done, but Nintendo needs to find that approach...

Nintendo has been mum about the rest of the years software lineup. Hopefully a plethora of worthwhile software is announced later via nintendo direct and at e3. As it stands it doesn't look promising.  This month should be ok, Lego City, Need for Speed, and Monster Hunter are coming. While not massive sytems sellers, they will do well to strenthen the library.

Ditch it and go back to motion controlled sports games.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Wii U should have been a tablet.

They shouldn't have made the tablet as a controller. it just doesn't feel good at all, and i see it more of a nuisance in games instead of helping. Now if they bundled it with the pro controller and had every game support it i wouldn't have any problem with the wii u and i would actually get one but after using the controller it put me off until zelda and xenoblade come out.
