If there is confusion in the title than it's a marketing fault not a naming problem

no. a car company cant release a new sports car and call it the snail and not expect to run into some problems. the name of your product matters.

I prefer Super Wii, it would still have the wii brand name but also let people know its an upgrade
When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.
I don't think the name is the problem. I don't think they are promoting it enough. I talked to my brother recently and he didn't even realize the Wii U was Nintendo's new console. He thought it was their new handheld system. I just think there are a lot of people that don't even know Nintendo has a new console out.
I doubt anyone is stupid enough to make that mistake. They would have to be feral or mentally retarded, and if that is the case than they wouldn't be buying any kind of electronics anyway.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

To a certain degree yes. The people saying no are core gamers or, at the very least, people more knowledgeable than the current casual gamer audience that Nintendo is trying to target for the most part. I have a friend who works in EB games (GameStop) and around half the people he talks too that are interested in the WiiU actually believe it to be just the tablet controller add on set at a new console price. (Which, obviously would be a rip-off)
The Nintendo U would have been a far better choice. Keeping Wii in the name without adding a numeral was a mistake especially given the uninformed target audience. The Nintendo faithful and core gamers are responsible for it's near Wii like sale at launch and the casuals whom Nintendo needed for legs just are not there. That's why Sony are sticking with a numerical order ad M$ will also see Nintendo's current problem and work around it too.

I think Sony's naming standard is best--just gets straight to the point--but MS's method works too. Neither 360 or the potential use of Infinity or 8 for the NextBox sound like add-ons, while the Kinect does.
Still, even if they called the NextBox the Xbox+ or something, I'm sure Microsoft will do a FAR better job of promoting it as a new console than Nintendo has done with the WiiU. That's the real problem, not the name.

Wii 2 wouldve been far more appropriate, and wouldve let people know it's actually a NEW console. Wii U just makes it sound like it's an add-on.

Without doubt it is more games than anything, but also more price, I have seen it atleast 10 times in various stores, people wanted the Wii, did not want the Wii U because it was more expensive, most of the time it was to replace a Wii and they had a bunch of games for the Wii, after telling them it played all the Wii games they ended up getting the Wii U. On the other hand it is also truly the games, I bought 8 games at launch, was a good time, have several games pre-ordered (ACM canceled however) so the games will come. Fortuntely my 3DS has kept me busy with Fire Emblem, and for anything else my computer is a beast that stalks the earth so I can play anything I want there.
I agree with the OP to a point. Based from personal experience many casuals are not quite sure what the wii u is. These people are not going to waste their time looking up what wii u is, they are not that interested. They need to be told. These same people are among the millions of casuals that bought the original wii.
As one of the few gamers at work many colleagues usually ask me about what console or games I suggest they get as gifts for relatives, friends or whoever at christmas or for b'days.
The fact that many are not quite sure what wii u is makes this obvious to me that there is confusion.
Do you know what the really amazing thing is? Many actually think wii u is just the gamepad.
They thought that the wii u gamepad was an addon (like kinect or move) for the original wii.
The Nintendo wii practically sold itself. Nintendo must understand the wii u won't. Better marketing and ads are required.
