So are you saying the Wii U should also be considered dead or that neither console should be? They aren't in exactly the same situation.

Neither should be. I don't think Wii U or Vita will ever sell particularly well, but well enough to have its own share of successes.

I know they aren't in the same situation but I do think the Wii U is going to be in bigger trouble. It reached 10k faster than any Nintendo product before it and any big titles are far off. Vita at least will have a short 2 month span of stuff to make its situation look a little better in Japan.

I guess it's a glass-half-empty/full situation. To me the outlook is much better for Wii U than for Vita. The Wii U has a lot of exclusive first-party content on the way, while the Vita has little to look forward to this year that has been announced. The Vita is already being thrashed by its primary competitor, while the Wii U has 6 months to get its shit together before it has to worry about its main competition for the next generation. Wii U has only been selling poorly for a couple of months, Vita has been selling poorly for a year. And, according to the link provided by MDMA, the Vita also reached 10k faster than any Sony product before it -- and it has been under 10k for 26 of its last 52 weeks.

I disagree about the content on the way.

Vita has more first party games coming this year, for what we know, and they all seem to be very ambitious ( Soul Sacrifice, Tear Away, Killzone) and we know there is some games coming sony keep secret ( sony bend game ).

While the WiiU.. we know for sure that Pikmin 3 is coming this year ( well no really for sure, it could be postponed like so many games on 3DS the first year ) and that's all we saw... Nintendo said there will be a Mario Kart at the end of the year...That's all for the big games coming on Wii U, for what we know.

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

Many stores have dropped the price already since the announcement last week. The "official" price cut isn't until today, but you could buy it at the new price at pretty much all of the stores I went to this past week.

So, the sales are due to mouth power, because you cant possibly know the price cut is effective in some stores which didnt wait for the official date

Most likely just people checking out game stores and then seeing the new price drop already at those stores. Or they've heard about the price cut (it was shown in last weeks Famitsu magazine) went to the store to check out games and saw that the price had already been lowered and picked one up.

I heard about the price cut as I visit game forums like these. When I was checking out games I saw that the price had already been reduced (eventhough the official drop day is 2/28). If I had been interested in Vita then I would have picked one up then.

Vita has been for just over a year. It has sold poorly for most of it. It did have some nice weeks and some SW has done pretty well. It also helps that a ton of software is being sold digitally. I don't really consider the 3DS and Vita to be primary competitors. I know they are in terms the most recent handhelds, but the hardware is very different and the audiences are also very different. The experiences each offer are both very different. The Vita was also never expected to compete with the 3DS (just as no sane person expected the PSP to beat the DS in sales), especially after Nintendo and Capcom had the new MH deal.

I do want to say I do not think either platform is dead or anything like that. That said, the 3DS looked rather dreary before its price cut as well. Outside of Mario Kart and a price cut, what would signicantly boost sales? Mario is already out as is MH. Pikmin won't sell a lot and the only other thing I can think of is Smash Bros or a new Animal Crossing.

The price has been low, especially for the black one, but the other "newer" colors were still more expensive. I had seen new black ones selling in the 21,000 yen area (wifi and the original 3G version.) The other colors were more like 22,500/26,500 (wifi/3G) roughly. I don't remember the exact price but in the range give or take.
