They can't rename it anymore, it's too late, and the error wasn't the name, but killing Wii far too early, making its name and brand recognition weaker when its successur was eventually launched.

Yes the name is confusing, but changing the name will do more harm than good and will bring even more confusion.

Wii U is the antithesis of what the Wii name was. It's not fresh, it's hard to pronounce, and it gets confused with Wii.

I do have to admit... the branding for Wii U and 3DS software and hardware leaves many non/casual gamers extremely confused. So much so, in fact, that last holiday NoA had to release a video literally discussing that 3DS games don't play on DS, but DS games play on 3DS, and that Wii games play on Wii U, but not the other way around. Not even kidding. You can find it on YouTube. NoA PR rep Kit Ellis is the host in the video.

No one in my family, even my sister, who is somewhat aware of how videogame systems work, seems able to comprehend that 3DS is the successor to DS. The name, software packaging, and messaging is just too similar.

I thought it in 2011, and I still think it to this day... Nintendo ought to have named the 3DS a Game Boy _____. Game Boy X... Game Boy 4.... Something. Anything. 3DS does not do nearly enough to distinguish itself from DS and if you're a soccer mom or whoever walking into a store looking to get your kid/teenager a new handheld, you're going to have trouble figuring out the difference between 3DS/DS. Nintendo really messed up with their messaging and they are paying for it right now.

Same goes for Wii U, but at least Wii U software packaging is vastly different than Wii software. I assume it's because they realized the mistake they made when designing 3DS packaging.

I've always thought that the name needed changing, Nintendo seem to change the names of there consoles nearly every gen.
