No, who renames a product after launch?

Not many. But many product get a redirection or refocus of it perception for the general audience.

This would be more of a name shtifting, then purely a name change.

They can accomplish this with marketing and more high-quality games

I've personally never been fond of Nintendo's decision to name this generation's console the Wii U, but I don't think it would be a good idea to change the name either. Regardless, once E3 comes around and developers start announcing their next-gen projects, as well as the other previously announced Wii U titles start releasing, I'm hopeful that the Wii U sales will start to pick up.

I'm not suggesting that a fast switch would be done, but a gradual phasing out of the part by marketing in the first place.

Meaning that commercials and packaging would center around showing the front and center. So people might related to it as the U, even though the official boxname at that time would still be the Wii U.

When perception has shifted to the U as the common name, then Nintendo could quitely change the packaging or naming...
... and no one would really notice. Or care.

But people know what "Wii" is, & people know what "Nintendo" is, they don't know what "U" is.  If they changed the name to Nintendo U, or Wii 2 people would take notice, seeing it as a new thing altogether.  "A "U", what's a "U"?",  & good luck trademarking a letter.

bold: Great point. Didn't thing about that. No way you can properly trademark that U. Dang :(

I'm not sure if Wii 2 would do it. The wii sounded new. I understand it has a lot marketing power left, but still it's not helping the Wii U at this moment.

Nintendo U is better. The Nintendo U is so obvious, and the nintendo part be left silent for most people.

Right, people would still casually refer to it as the "U", but to put the Nintendo brand back up front would have been smart.  Gamers respect "Nintendo" much more then "Wii".  Even the new audience the Wii created gained respect for the games Nintendo made, the Wii hardware itself, for some, was surely a disappointment, but the Nintendo games were quality.

Keep the WiiU logo, but advertise it as Wii Ultimate. People will then relate to what the U represents. The Wii brand was too strong last gen to completley drop it.

The Wii brand is a dead well beaten horse at this point, drop it, star fresh, Nintendo U.  And the U doesn't mean "ultimate", it means "you", it would confuse the message to now say it means "ultimate".

I can see why they kept the Wii brand, 100 million people have bought into it. The U however is a different matter, you descibed it as meaning "you". But how many people actually know that, the U could be stealthily changed to represent "Ultimate" which gives the impression of a more powerful console. Then money wont need to be spent on logo re-branding.

You just cant kill Wii brand, its too damn big, it was a tough call for Nintendo, the result is not that bad imo, WiiU sounds and feels like what it is, a SuperWii with a tablet

IMO it should only be "Nintendo U". Just have "compatible with Wii" on boxes and after commercials.

It should have, but it's too late now

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

Even though I'm not a Nintendo fan, I still think the Wii U is an atrocious name that just doesn't justify the technology and capabilities of the hardware and system.

All of this, of course, is just my opinion.

Skyrim 100%'d. Dark Souls 100%'d.
Dark Souls > Skyrim.
Halo 4 is the best damn FPS since Halo 3.
Proud pre-orderer of 2 PS4's and an Xbox One.

Currently Playing: Dark Souls II, South Park
Playstation 4: MGS V GZ, Killzone: Shadow Fall, NBA 2k14.

At first I thought this was all nonsense, that the name was pretty clear, but the other day I was at a games store, checking out the price of the Wii U, when my girlfriend (a gamer herself, very smart and educated) asked my why the thing was so expensive, and why Nintendo did not offer the controller on it's own... I replied "How would that work? You need the console". And she said that many people already had a Wii. She actually thought it was just an add-on.

I understand. Nintendo's philosophy; Wii U will have brand name recognition. The problem. Wii doesn't sell anymore. Hasn't for about a year. Wii U is different. Shouldn't it have a different name?

If the Wii U was a true sequel to Wii, wouldn't its main controller be an enhanced version of the Wii Remote? Just as the Snes controller was an enhanced version of the Nes?

If the name of the Wii U was different it would push a lot more units; HOWEVER, the discrepancy is, how stupid are consumers?

Consumers are smart enough to know the difference between a ps1, 2, 3, and 4 but not between a Wii and a Wii U? So is it the Letter U? What is it?

My final thoughts. The Wii U looks similar to a Wii. The only difference is the controller. When Nintendo advertises the Wii U, they focus on the controller itself and not the console. This makes is look like more of a Wii peripheral than a brand new system. At least in the eyes of sheep. Nintendo has the cards, they just tend not to play them the right way.

NINTENDO

nintendo forever . . .
