Yeah, things will look quite different later this year. I'm criticizing the Wii U left and right but people shouldn't assume PS4 and Xbox 8 launches will be smooth as butter. Sony already said they "don't know yet" whether the PS4 will launch in 2013 in Europe. Going by history of console launches the PS4 will be pushed back in Europe, both consoles will be $400 or higher, most of their line-up will consist of pumped up current-gen ports and there'll be severe production issues for at least one of the two companies. Also, the PS4 won't be backwards compatible which means people can either choose a $199 PS3 with loads of great games or a $400-500 PS4 with a few launch titles. At the same time the Wii U will have a healthy library of games, 3D Mario, Mario Kart and a Zelda remake and definitely get a price drop before the holidays start.

Not saying the Wii U is going to win next gen but launching a new console is never a walk in the park. I'm looking forward to both the NextBox and the PS4 but I won't fool myself into thinking they'll fly off the shelves when they launch later this year at high prices and a small library.

I've never agreed with you more. They will come through, and the 3DS shows how capable they are when they need to make things better.

3DS has pokemon, it wont be affected by the new home consoles. With a holiday price tag, bundles, etc 3DS will beat everybody very easily. Wii U i cant say now intill e3 though unfortunately

Sony and Microsft aren't going to launch with lots of units though. Due to the fact that they will lose so much much for selling each unit they will not produce that many eary on until components get cheaper and will try to offset the cost by getting the units into the hands of the most dedicated gamers who are going to purchase more software for it.

Nintendo does need to be agressive but I think they will be just fine this Christmas.  They need more games and will have them.. They will have Pikmin 3 and Wind Waker HD this Christmas as well as either Mario 3d and/or Mario Kart plus Bayonetta 2. They may also have some surprises. If Nintendo does a small price drop and a bundle such as 279.99 for a White Wiiu with New Super Mario Bros U i think they will have an enormous Christmas.  Handheld sales are largely momentum based. The more kids who have them in their hands the more the other kids are jealous for not having them. They will sell even more 3ds units this year than last year and will have a big new Pokemon game coming out which has always been Nintendo's biggest system selling handheld franchise.

Unless either Sony / MS come out with a cheap console coupled with a real system seller (and not prettier 7th gen games), Nintendo doesn't have to worry about them, because they'll be starting off very slow. Just focus on adding value to the Wii U, forget the competition, right now it isn't worth $300 because it has no games, a bleak future (3rd party support), with better alternatives available on the market (PS3 / 360).

Another Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Wii Fit will help, but it won't get them out of the shit they're in. They need something new. Unfortunately I think they've been out of ideas for a while now, so it's looking like a Gamecube repeat this gen.

It will be interesting 2 see how this year pans out for Nintendo, little bit of a make of break situation for the Wii U.

Nintendo can sit there looking stupid, we've seen this happen before, but I doubt they'll try to do it this year. Especially around the Holiday. That's Nintendo territory.
