Forums - Gaming - Could a western developer make a good Turn based RPG?

I was trying to think of a good Turn based JRPG style  type game made by a western dev and realized that I couldn't think of one.  So I wondered if there have been any notable ones that I couldn't think of.

But the question I have is which western developer has the talent to make a blockbuster Turn based RPG?  Or is it soley the Japanese who can make them.

Ultima franchise and also Wizardtry.  These are both the foundation for JRPGs and come out of western developers.  You can also think of XCom as having RPG like elements I believe.

As of now, considering the state of Final Fantasy, I would ask: Who in JAPAN can make a blockbuster turn-based JRPG?  Turn-based is a style not too many are developing in today, with XCom likely the biggest one most recently.

I would argue to stop looking at the Square Enix house and look...pretty much anywhere else. Stuff like Ni no Kuni, the recent Tales etc. have been getting decent to good reviews, if we are talking blockbuster, lets kill that dream right now, outside of mabye DQ no JRPG series have ever had the pedigree of the FF games, thats not going to change just cause they started sucking, especially in this day and age.

I ended up focused on the word "blockbuster".  As of now, I don't see turn-based being part of anything being blockbuster, or even AAA level production, unless you look to Square Enix.  Doesn't mean they aren't done, just not a main focus.  For western turn-based stuff, best to look towards computers anyhow, as the PC strategy crowd is where is at for western stuff.  On that note, the biggest turn-based game released this generation on consoles is like X-Com: Enemy Unknown.

i think they can...as long as its you know..."adventure" like.

Skulls of the Shogun is a decent turn-based strategy title too.

On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness was the first thing that popped into my head.  There are three episodes now.

Gameplay: Dragon's Dogma, Final Fantasy 11 and 12, Demon's Soul's, Dark Souls, Vagrant Story.

Non-linear story ones: Secret of Mana, Romancing Saga (Oddly, IGN described its non-linear story as a negative aspect of the game), Star Ocean 1 & 2, Valkyrie Profile.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

Yep.  It came out mid 2012.  They just announced a 4th recently too.
