Forums - Gaming - Will the PS4 dwarf the specs of the next XBox? If so, why you think so?

they'll be close enough to not really matter. no way ms pulls a wiiU.

Well, considering the PS4 spec rumors were right, then most likely the NeXbox rumors are right, too. The rumors say the PS4's GPU is ~50% more powerful and it has much faster RAM. It also seems MS is going to be using more of the RAM (3-4GB) for the OS, while PS4 will be using less (512MB-1GB) for it, leaving more for developers. So while it won't completely dwarf it, per se, there will definitely be a difference in exclusives. Maybe more noticeable than this gen.

Now, some want to imagine it will be quite easy for MS to change the HW to be more powerful, but that's not the case. Not unless they want to rush their console out before significant testing of the newly designed HW, which could lead to a RROD type situation again, or delay their launch by several months. Plus, only the hardcore MS fans want them to change it just so they will be more powerful, like they were in the Xbox days. However, if the last few years are anything to go on, as well as rumors, MS seems to be focusing more on the casual crowd.

This is about as well as it can be said... or type :)

On the hardware side this gen, Microsoft and Sony targeted the core gamers. Upcoming gen it will be Sony and Valve. Microsoft seems to be focusing their efforts into the casual crowd

I think the situation will be similar to the PS3/360, where the PS3 sports impressive benchmarks but the elegant architecturee of the 360 allows cheaper manufacturing for parity performance.

But this time around the PS4 is just as "elegant" if not more than the nextbox. It's nothing like last gen with the PS3 and 360.

No we do not no anything concrete about either design.

Um what? Did you not watch Sony's press conference?

Yes, and there was no final hardware there. The tech reveal was that the PS4 has a CPU/GPU and RAM, which isn't a design it's a feature list. The design is how all of this ties together, observations of any custom silicon etc.

Well, thanks.  And Burt Reynolds kicks ass, btw.

This is a bit more than just saying it has a CPU/GPU and RAM. Add in all the developer responses and yeah, it's not a repeat of the PS3 coding fiasco.

According to strong rumors and devkit information, the PS4 is technically superior. Forget about rumors, one of the key strategies for Microsoft to outsell Sony is price. Xbox will most likely be 50$-100$ cheaper. It's impossible to achieve the same specs with lower price let alone when Kinect is bundled with it!

With that been said, it wont quite "dwarf" it.

There are still some questions regarding the PS4 final SKU though. Will the displayed double-eye camera be default? That's implied by the move light on the controller. Also will they upspec the bluray to the uncommon 4-layer drive required for 4K bluray, or will they stick to the common 2-layer drive?

I don't know about eye camera. But I think it may cost sony dearly if they upgrade the regular bluray drive to the standard drive of 4K videos. I don't think 4K is going to be mainstream in gaming until 2020 where a new generation begins. 4K is currently unnecessary and unachievable in gaming.

I was thinking if Sony tries to use the PS4 profile to mainstream 4K bluray, for their 4K TV business. I wouldn't blame them for wanting to, but it's something that MS wouldn't need to consider.

It'll be just like last time, they'll look the virtually identical graphically.

other than first party games and GDDR5 may make for faster load times and OS navigation (app switching, downloads, boot up)

The rumours were spot on for PS4, they'll most likely be spot on for the Nextbox, 1.8 vs 1.2 TFLOPs. Altough MS might ditch the anti consumer shenanigans like blocking used games after hearing Sony allowing them.
