Forums - Gaming - Will the PS4 dwarf the specs of the next XBox? If so, why you think so?

Don't think so. Sony added more RAM to match MS and MS will upgrade their GPU to match Sony!

Sony doubled their RAM. That's expensive. Why would they do that. The only reason would be to offset some other advantage they're spies found out about the Nextbox. It's far too early and I don't like rumors, but Sony wouldn't all of a sudden decide to spend that kind of money on each PS4 unless the Nextbox has something going on under the hood that they felt they needed to respond to.

Yeah but I think the doubling of the ram has to do with non graphics related stuff Sony probably wanted to compete with the features and OS stuff MS wants. 4gb just for games is enough to feed the Gpu and Cpu. The other 4gb is probably for certain OS features and a smooth and quick overall experience plus headroom for future projects, more flexibility and as a gift for developers . This was clearly a response to the 8gb from MS. What the "spies" found out was that the Xbox had 8gb.

I don't think they need 4gb of GDDR5 RAM for the OS.  If they were putting extra in there for the OS they would make it DDR3 since menus and apps don't take that much.   They said it's unified unlike PS3 so I think it's really for devs to go wild.  Imagine what ND and SSM can do with that if they did GoW3 and U3 with 256mb!

Its not just for the OS its also for the OS. Ofcourse it will help devs to do things they weren't able to do it gives them more flexibility but purely graphics speaking the Cpu and Gpu could have been easily fed with 4gb. But it would have been an obstacle and Sony+Devs would've had a harder time and more limitations. The update was a great decision It allows Sony to do everything MS could do and more, without compromising any games. Now devs might have 6gb+ without having to worry about space and Sony can use 1gb-2gb for the OS to implement everything MS could come up with, @ 4gb Sony would have gotten in to trouble to stay within 512 Mb and offer a seamless multitasking experience and game developers would have to optimize more or compromisse the quality of the games down the line

MS can't just upgrade the Gpu because the faster the gpu the more bandwith you need. 32mb esram + 8gb DDR3 is enough to feed the 1.2 Tflop Gpu that is rumored but would bottleneck a lets say 2 Tflop GPU. So MS would have to redesign the whole GPU and also go GDDR5 there is a reason why all GPUs over a certain power will not come with DDR3 and 32mb ESRAM is barely enough to cater to the current GPU.

I think MS best short term option to react to the PS4 would be to put in 2 APUs with 4 Cpu cores tacked on and each with 32 MB Esram (total 64 mb) or they have to take out the Esram up the GPU, change the memory controller and go for GDDR5 too. But if they haven't done that months ago they won't make it in time. They can't just upgrade the GPU without increasing Esram size or it will not be maxed out properly. A Geforce Titan with DDR3 is weaker than a 7870 with GDDR5. The Titan would have to wait 90% of the time for the RAM to deliver data because the GPU works way faster and the memory can't keep up giving the GPU work to do, so the GPU just does nothing all the time. Crysis 3 would run at 5fps on a DDR3 Geforce Titan .

MS would have to redesign alot of stuff (based on the rumors ofc) its not enough to just put in 8 additional CUs to the GPU and double ROPs without also changing how the memory works.

I guess they will be more or less the same. Somewhere in the 5 - 15% region.

But after I saw how this game looked on the Wii U, I think 3-4 times as powerful as the Wii U should be enough.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Yes, because adding more gb to the same type of Ram is the same as changing the GPU entirely.. someone doesn't understand how computers work.

The PS3 had huge advantages over the xbox on paper- even a bluray player. In the end if the PS4 is more powerful it wont matter in real world gaming. I mean they say the Ps4 is 7 times more powerful then the xbox360.. While the new xbox is only 6 times more powerful... So what?

Also Durango is essentially the same architecture as 360.. Just much more powerful.. No learning curve- better games sooner.. Some core Sony developers have never done x86.. Itll be a learning curve..

Real world gaming = little to no difference

360 is PowerPC. Xbox 3 is x86 if the rumors are correct. So it's not the same architecture. Not at all.

That very well could be.. One thing the Xb360, Ps4, and New Xbox have in common is games will be designed around the GPU.. Unlike the PS3 in which games had to be optimized around CELL..

Being that the ps4 and New Xbox are likely to have the same GPU ( a Radeon chip of the same model or very close model) the GPU's will have the same ( or at least very close ) in terms of graphical fill rates.. The limiting factor will more or less be the GPU for graphics and frame rates on both consoles..

My experience from building custom PC's is it only takes a mid range cpu to fully utilize a mid to high end graphic gpu ( such as the Radeon)...This is the main reason I feel games will be very close in quality because they rely most heavily on the fill rate of the gpu.. Mating a more powerful cpu with the same gpu doesnt improve the performance of the gpu when it was already being fully utilized

Despite the likely possibility of faster GDDR on the PS4 the speed is sorta slowed by the system bus to an extent which is why MS's solution is to put small amount of memory ( much faster, more exspensive then GDDR5 ) called ESram directly on the GPU die which speeds up the system bus making it nearly as fast as the bandwidth of the GDDR5.  It doesnt take much esram because the data will not reside there more then millionths of a second.. So two ideas: I mean - put faster memory on a slower bus and the memory still has to wait on the bus..or speed up the bus to more fully utilize slower memory- its sorta a 'wash' in terms of real world application and performance..

I don't think its abnormal to compare specs but in the end I think the reality is the two consoles will be very close in terms of game quality. Both systems will be leaps above the current systems.. 1080p on every game will be expectable..  More powerful consoles dont typically win.. And they tend to cost more to make.. Sony is walking a fine line.. MS has already said no money will be made on the New Xbox -itll be sold at launch at 'cost'... Is Sony selling at cost?

In the end itll be nice to see two great consoles released for all of us.. The Wii U isnt selling bad especially consindering the world  economy isnt good.. But i also think more people will buy xbox and ps4 this time around.. I dont mean the wii u will come in last.. But i think it could another 'close' generation.. Sony isnt as worried about how many consoles they sell like the fans obcessed with the PS3 outselling the Xbox.. Does it matter more to the Sony office they've reported Four straight years of loss in the game division?   Sony is more about returning to being profitable- which is just on reason they ditched CELL.. Games will make the money and now itll cost less to make those games- its another reason game price wont go up anytime soon..

If the New Xbox is x86 its sorta win -win.. Since we know the ps4 already is.. Developers will port games cheaper, faster and the quality will be very close in terms of graphics.. Only down side- more exclusives could go multiplatform being its all x86

According to strong rumors and devkit information, the PS4 is technically superior. Forget about rumors, one of the key strategies for Microsoft to outsell Sony is price. Xbox will most likely be 50$-100$ cheaper. It's impossible to achieve the same specs with lower price let alone when Kinect is bundled with it!

With that been said, it wont quite "dwarf" it.

There are still some questions regarding the PS4 final SKU though. Will the displayed double-eye camera be default? That's implied by the move light on the controller. Also will they upspec the bluray to the uncommon 4-layer drive required for 4K bluray, or will they stick to the common 2-layer drive?

Considering every PS4 controller has the light projector thing on it, I would be surprised if the camera isn't bundled with every PS4.

So it will be "the sons of the HD twins"?
