Forums - Gaming - Will the PS4 dwarf the specs of the next XBox? If so, why you think so?

Just wondering....

Mutliplatform Next Gen Shooter.. released on both console
PS4 have 16xAA / 16xAF
X720 have 8xAA / 8xAF

would that matter ?

i really hope sony dont make the mistake of pricing ps4 like $100 more than the 720. that would be a huge mistake! same price or $50 more at most would be fine. PS3 was $200 more than 360 at one point.

Sony doubled their RAM. That's expensive. Why would they do that. The only reason would be to offset some other advantage they're spies found out about the Nextbox. It's far too early and I don't like rumors, but Sony wouldn't all of a sudden decide to spend that kind of money on each PS4 unless the Nextbox has something going on under the hood that they felt they needed to respond to.

Yeah but I think the doubling of the ram has to do with non graphics related stuff Sony probably wanted to compete with the features and OS stuff MS wants. 4gb just for games is enough to feed the Gpu and Cpu. The other 4gb is probably for certain OS features and a smooth and quick overall experience plus headroom for future projects, more flexibility and as a gift for developers . This was clearly a response to the 8gb from MS. What the "spies" found out was that the Xbox had 8gb.

Developers were requesting 8GB of RAM to work with, so it makes sense that Sony would give it to them.  Having the developers only work with 4GB of RAM was actually good practice, to be honest and a good way to limit leaks.

I think the situation will be similar to the PS3/360, where the PS3 sports impressive benchmarks but the elegant architecturee of the 360 allows cheaper manufacturing for parity performance.

But this time around the PS4 is just as "elegant" if not more than the nextbox. It's nothing like last gen with the PS3 and 360.

The overall system specs of PS4 are superior to the rumored Xbox720.

The GPU is superior slightly (18 CUs compared to 16 CUs) and the RAM is superior (8GB GDDR5 vs 8GB DDR3 + 32MB ESRAM). The CPU is the same.

The biggest disparity in performance will be cause by the bandwidth difference because of the GDDR5 being faster than DDR3. Both of these designs are based off of AMD APUs and we know for a fact that these APUs love more bandwidth since both the CPU and GPU part of the core use the same RAM. So the faster the RAM is the better the APU performs as seen in the following link:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/memory-bandwidth-scaling-trinity,3419-4.html

Microsoft's console migh be cheaper because of this configuration because it seems like they did this as a cost saving measure.

The Xbox design will undoubtedly be cheaper to manufacture as DDR3 RAM is very common, and the system design will also likely run cooler and require less power; also lowering manufacturing costs.

The memory article you linked only compares different spec of DDR3. It would be interesting to see a similar comparison of GDDR vs DDR as the design of GDDR lends itself more to GPU streaming applications at the expense of low-latency random access as a CPU prefers. MS undoubtedly considered GDDR for the next xbox as they used a GDDR3 unified design for the 360. I would be interested to see the tradeoff affect of both implementations.

No we do not no anything concrete about either design.

Um what? Did you not watch Sony's press conference?

Yes the PS4 will be more powerful spec wise. No it doesn't matter for Microsoft. They seem to be targeting a different base than Sony... the casual crowd.

There are 2 companies that are targeting the core gamer imo. Sony and Valve. Microsoft is all about the casual. Nintendo is like screw it, we're going to do our own thing lol

It'll be just like last time, they'll look the virtually identical graphically.
