Could be or just that they felt that they were neck and neck in terms of specs (which is my prediction) and decided to up the ante so it can have the more powerful console. @OP: I think that its gonna be pretty close, only difference being that PS4 will have GDDR5.

Edit: If the rumored 1gb - 1.5gb of RAM dedicated solely to the OS for the Nextbox is accurate, could possibly make the difference a little more noticeable. Still, don't expect a big difference at all.

What's to stop MS from doubling their RAM too? It's still so early and nothing is in production yet. Some stuff can't be changes, but other stuff can be. RAM is one of those things that can be swapped if MS feels the need to.

I don't think it will dwarf the 720

Is the question in retaliation to somebody? if so, who said that PS4 was going to seriously "dwarf" 720??

Its not going to outclass it.

If the rumored specs are true though there will be a visible difference even in multiplats PS4 has an advantage in raw computing power and a superior memory setup. It will be easy to put the power advantage to use.

But the specs of the Xbox could be old and who knows maybe MS will put two Apus in it instead of one.

Nothing is set in stone yet those discussions are pointless right now. But PS4 will not dwarf the Xbox 720 as of right nowthe difference is better textures and 1080p for PS4 vs 900p and slightly worse textures for 720. The difference to the untrained eye will be small.

Nope. See my thread. They are very comparable and will likely have very little to no differences in overall game content.

It won't dwarf them, but the PS4 look's to be a more powerful. Having said that, if that extra power means the console is a lot more expensive, then I think I'd prefer the cheaper and slightly less poweful console, and I think most people will too.

There's always a chance that it won't be as strong as the nextbox. What's important though is that they're making it easier for developers to make games for the console. This is good news for people like me who love Japanese-made games. Many developers from Japan switched to developing for the Wii and portable consoles because the cell processor was too difficult to code for.

Already have the Wii U just waiting for the PS4 and I'll be set for next-gen. Can't wait!!

Nice reasoning. And something I tend to agree with. MS may very well have something more powerful under the hood.

GPU: PS4 -  1.84TF, 18CU, 32ROP's / 720 - 1.2TF, 12CU, 16ROP's

RAM: PS4 -  8GB GDDR5 / 720 - 8GB DDR3 + 32MB ESRAM

That's a pretty big difference.
