Forums - Sony - Playstation 4 Blocking Used Games: "Up to the Publisher"

"Now, this could mean two things. One, that publishers are obviously free to step up their existing online pass strategies to block more – or possibly all – game content from those who buy a pre-owned game without a code.

The second option is that Sony HAS incorporated tech into the PS4 that allows publishers to distinguish between new and pre-owned games. It’s then up to them if they choose to utilise it."

That's a pretty scary idea.

Allard said above that they already had that in the PS3.

Well hopefully nothing comes of it, like on the ps3.

How would they block used games? The publishers that is. Sell an online pass, sure, that is expected but what else can they do?

PS3 has the ability to tell if a disc has been played on another console or not. They could potentially include the same technology and publishers could do that check each time you boot the disc up.

Or other possibilities. I'm gonna call BS on this though, none of these companies are dumb enough to block used games.

Don't be too sure. Capcom actually did it on the 3DS with Resident Evil: Mercenaries

say what?!?!

It worked somewhat different, but still: You had no way to delete the savedata, so whoever bought the game off you was forced to play with your (probably completed) savegame, not being able to unlock anything new. While you technically were still able to play the game you had no incentive to do so.

First time I hear of this ability.

But if the ps3 had this ability without ever using it I don't see what have changed compared to the ps3?

The real topic maybe:as Nintendo and MS now also have blu ray and zhe ability the three may built a blocking game cartel(similar to phobos light bulb cartel) to force people to accept this as they would have no choice then. But that's very unlikelx.

I read somewhere that you can't start over/replay the game cause you are limited to one save only.

I'm pretty sure that Capcom learned a lesson from that as well, Pretty sure that game didn't sell well at all with all the bad press about it. It was mostly a time attack game, so it didn't really affect it THAT much. In this case, gamers voted with their wallets, and capcom lost out. Hey, kinda like DmC!

I'm the result of someone exclusively playing Final Fantasy XI from the PS2 release till 2010, and only stopping for small bouts of catch up.

On possibility of PS4 blocking used games

When you purchase the disc-based games on PS4, it should work on any hardware. So that's what I'm saying.

On activation codes for secondhand PS4 titles

It's a publisher decision. We are not talking about it. Sorry.

Seems to me like they are confirming online passes and that gamespot is manipulating the facts for hits
