Anyway there some graphics techs that can be used only with a lot of RAM like Voxel cone tracing for GI and shadows.

Anybody have the full specs of the PC running the Elemental Demo???

If its true, but about the wrong demo, then... well, thats not true. 

 

As far as RAM goes, the GTX 680 is a 2gb card. Now why wouldn't the PS4 version look better then the 680 PC version?

Hint; it has to do with fillrate and pixel shader rate. IE 8gb of ram is removing 1 bottleneck from the system, but other bottlenecks still remain.

You forget the main PC RAM used in the Demo... PS4 4GB (now 8GB) is for CPU and GPU... the Demo runs with a GTX 680 with 2GB + CPU with XGB... this demo needs more than 4GB of RAM I guess.

That's what the guy in Beyond3D said... seems like the Demo was changed to remove some tech that use a big amont of RAM.



Just for clarification, 680 is some 50-60% faster than what's inside PS4.

The main RAM in a computer is used by the CPU, and only the CPU. To give you some point of reference, crysis 2 uses about 800mb of system ram., ie what the CPU is using.

Finally I found.

Of couse the Demo not used all these 16GB RAM but I think it used more than 4GB VRAM + System RAM combined... the Epic DevMachine have the same amount of RAM present in the new DevKit for PS4.



This is Tech demo stuff for LAUNCH PS4 games. Lots of optimisation still to come. Anyway, i'm looking foward to what ND can crank out within the PS4 lifespan (Compare Drakes fortune to TLOU).

What are you not understanding about this.

VRAM, that is attached to the GPU, is what the GPU is using to draw everything you see on the screen. Literally everything; every texture, model, particle, ect and the frame buffer. In the case of the GTX 680 that is 2gb, which means the most that it can be using for every assest you see on screen is 2gb.

Now how much system RAM is being used is who knows how much. You cited battlefield at 1400mb, and I'm going to assume you are referring to BF3. In that case, BF3 is using around 1400mb in VRAM. Hey, what you are saying is ture this time! sorta.. This is not system ram but the VRAM on the GPU, and BF3 uses around 700-800mb of system RAM attached to the CPU. Get it? Thisgives you a total memory usage of around 2gb, 1.4gb on VRAM and .8gb on system ram.

I'd be shocked if a demo, which may very well be using all 2gb of VRAM is using over a gig of system RAM when a complex full featured game like BF3 comes nowhere close.

 

But again RAM is going to mean jack when the PS4 is playing a demo like this. Fill rate, pixel shader rate, ect are the bottlenecks rather then ram, and there is nothing you can do to magically get around those fillrate limits.

Every game need system RAM to run... not only VRAM.



Anyway @sieanr where are you getting 2GB for GTX 680 in this Demo??? I'm curious because there GTX 680 with 2GB, 3GB and 4GB... and I can't find nothing about this specific GTX 680.
