Forums - Sony - Six Problems With Today’s Disastrous PlayStation 4 Briefing

Article is silly, for several reasons. Here's a few;

He complains about it being too long yet half his other complaints were things that weren't shown and adressed, would these explanations and showings shorten the conference?

1: Hmm, Apple conferences will show you that consumers usually care a lot more about content and new features, and in this case software, than the actual look of the hardware. They also recieved relevant hardware specs and a basic idea of how it will function.

2: Okay, they never mentioned it, does that mean that it won't play used games? Seems like a strange conclusion. And if they have made it unable to utilize used software, would they spend time announcing this to deflate their own hype at the unveiling event of a brand new console? That would be an incredibly stupid move. Oh, and talking about this would only make the dreary thing last even longer. And what the hell is this about "PC's don't support used games" bullshit? Yes, they do, there are even digital stores such as Green Man Gaming (or Pale Steam Copy as I call it) that allows for digital trade-in of games. I have plenty of used and borrowed PC games.

3: One can assume that they will upgrade their server capacity and stability and work in more and better features, seeing as how the ENTIRE thing is being sold on online connectivity, sharing and social media applications. To not draw that conclusion yourself is beyond stupid. Oh, and this part would also add more time to the conference.

4: They talked a lot about "must own" features and the whole perspective from a lot of respected developers lends creedence and validity to the whole event. A couple of things were intriguing, some were just okay. Not talking about multiplatform games because they're available on other platforms is silly, as long as they're anticipated titles, they can come a long way towards selling the game on their machine along with the unique features that version will have, in this case the integration and shared play part as well as other things (vastly better visuals and sound than the last-gen counterparts, for instance). You talk about leaving everything out that doesn't pertain to "must own" features and yet insists on them focusing on minute details, talking about server capability, the looks and design of the console and whether it plays used games. Good job.

5: No BC is not a good thing, agreed. However, the Cloud Play idea is not a bad one, you'll find your harddrive filling up pretty damn fast, especially with PS3 titles being available. They didn't go into details, again you complain about them not spending more time, yet you have maintained that the event was far too long. "Nobody wants to stream games." Guess what? Nobody wants to stream movies, TV or music either. Oh wait. This is a natural step in the evolution of gaming, especially for older games which require a lot less resources and slower connections to function properly. Not to mention that its a terrific idea for Indie titles.

6: The launch date might not be clear, there are a lot of details that have to come into place. What other system has revelaed their exact lauch date 9-10 months before release? None, not even one. Distribution issues, product volume, game development, production of pack-in's and peripherals, advertising plans, retail deal brokering and sheer logistics puzzles to solve. Almost no product in the entire world has a set exact date this far ahead of time.
Do you also whine at the movies when they say "coming 2013" or "May 2014"?

7 This one's mine; this dude who wrote this is a twat. He also claims that PC gaming is dead...

And I wasn't even blown away by the conference or any of the contents individually.

This guy is clearly going to bat for Microsoft, but I do agree with much of what he says.

#6 probably should have been about price rather than date, though. I know, Nintendo didn't talk about price, either, but they should have. I think these guys use the reaction to their announcements to gauge how much the market will bear.

i agree with number 6 and 4

release date of 2013 could mean Japan only as the past 2 consoles havent had the same WW release as japan

would of liked to have seen more exclusives with new gameplay mechanics and not past gen sequels

This was for the american audience and in america. It's confirmed the launch window is for NA. Are you serious? if it wasnt expected to release here this year they wouldnt have mentioned a date or would have said Japan only.

It was announced too early clearly.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Even 3ds and wii u didn't get a price and a fix releaase date when they was announced and i didn't know that Killzone, infamous and the new race game are multiplatform.

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

PROBLEM 1

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Nintendo fail to show us the actual Wii U console itself when it first unveiled the controller and some games at E3 2012? I don't think any serious gamer is basing their purchase on the design of the console.

I think Nintendo had their console sitting there in plain view.  They just never brought it up or talked about it so everyone was confused on whether it was a new console or just a controller.

Not that I care what a console looks like. As long as its small enough to fit it where I need it, doesn't get hot or is too noisy.  I'm fine with PS3 bulky size or a small Wii size.

There's a lot of overreaction in this thread. The guy isn't right about everything, but he isn't wrong about it all either. Hang up your fanboy hats and think about it with a clear mind.

PROBLEM 1

Wrong.

I don't need to see a hunk of plastic to know it exists.

PROBLEM 2

Right.

I own the stuff I purchase and I'll be damned if I'll let Sony or any other company take my ownership rights away. I rarely sell my games, but if I did it's my right to do what I want with my property. Video games are no different from anything else I own.

PC retail is dead. That's why almost all PC games are also on consoles and are nearly always on a digital store like Steam. It always bothered me that most PC games have an activation key and I hate that digital downloads have no real world value.

PROBLEM 3

Meh. Right and wrong.

So long as you can play games online it doesn't matter. If Sony upgrade's their network then you can bet they'll charge for it. You can also bet you won't be streaming those Gaikai games for free. I think the reason Sony didn't talk much about their online strategy is because they are going to have a subscription for online gaming and they don't want that to be all people talk and bitch about. They wanted fans to leave happy and taking away free online gaming would have them running away screaming bloody murder.

PROBLEM 4

Right.

It was boring and it was too long. The only exclusive that peaked my interest was Killzone. I didn't need to sit through such a long boring conference to be told what we already knew. 3rd party multiplatform games will be on PS4. Really, no shit?

PROBLEM 5

Right.

If the PS4 can't play PS3 retail disc it's going to be very bad for Sony and for gamers.

I am a firm believer that each new generation should play all previous generations of games. I don't care how many formats  the games come in or how much it adds to the cost. I want to be able to play my original Gameboy carts on my 3DS XL and I want to play my PS1 games on my PS4.

Asking me to repurchase the games I still own is insulting and I won't do it. I keep my old systems around so I can play my old games and I keep an updated folder of extensive emulation programs as a back up incase soemthing bad happens and I can't repair or get a replacement system.

Streaming games is NOT an option and repurchasing games I already own isn't going to happen. Just do the right thing and support backwards compatibility.

PROBLEM 6

Wrong.

Holiday 2013 is good enough for now. Plenty of time to save up. I'm not preordering anything right now anyway.

I would have liked a firm price though.

I am sorry but the deflection taking place in this thread is nauseating. Nintendo fucking up with their unveil isn't any kind of license for Sony to fuck up with theirs. That is straight up ignorant, because it is reprehensible period. Fool yourselves all you want, but anybody who isn't blinded by mindless brand loyalty knows what the original author of the article knows. Not showing hardware, not releasing the price, and not pinpointing a release date. Are not only glaring omissions, but the lack of those disclosures undermines the credibility Sony sought.

I would like everyone to be honest with themselves. If you sat through a two hour sales pitch, and the salesman never touched on price, when exactly the product would be available, and they didn't even show you any kind of actual representation. Would you write that person a check to cash. I think most of you would never do such a thing. The fact that Sony obviously expect that is actually quite disappointing. Sony was long on promises, but short on what really matters which is guarantees.

The original author also has a valid point when it comes to backward compatibility. We understand why there would be technical issues with that happening. Given that the architecture of the new console would be radically different from its predecessor, but if Sony is going to try to address that with streaming. Then they absolutely need to address how that system will work, and more importantly demonstrate why latency will not be a issue at least in the developed world.

Lastly the original authors gripe about the style of presentation is basically a universal one when it comes to all the players. That doesn't however mean that it is a unwarranted one. Sony should have made a choice about who their audience was and tailored that experience to that audience. Either be a entertainment event, or a business event. All this trying to do both at the same time waters down the message. Business lingo is basically lost on gamers, and just plain bores them. While I have doubts that businessmen want to watch a lot of game videos with their precious time on their dime no less.

I think Sony missed a opportunity here, and I think it is a opportunity that the other players have missed on countless occasions. Had they treated this event as a straight entertainment venue. They could have created a really memorable experience for gamers.

I think people are more wanting to see the hunk of plastic to be assured that what is being shown is running on the PS4 and not a super PC or something else.  With the multiplats shown, for all we know they could have been some PS3 footage.

We have no idea, cause we didn't see a console.

Oh I wasn't aware that anyone believed that anything we saw was running on a PS4. If any game was they would have said so. Nope, it was all running on dev kits, which are just PCs with PS4 specs. The PS4 isn't ready yet. That's why the official tech specs have a disclaimer that they can change without notice.

The PS4 will run the games and probably runt hem better than we saw, but nothing today ran on a PS4.
