Forums - Gaming - Industry 'Not Sustainable' For Xbox 720 & PS4

The traditional pricing model will eventually change due to the budding indie game scene and the need for new IPs not feasibly priced at 60$, so I'm going to echo Subie_Greg on that point.

Also, currently those doing best on the digital scene is MS. However, nobody is going to buy a 400$+ console just for the indie scene, so that will cause the nextbox peak to be a little phased later than expected.

Sony appears to be readying a content-rich launch, with a focus on AAA games early on. That can only be to their advantage. However, the market for those games is, relatively, small.

As for Nintendo, the times are no longer like the gamecube days. Nintendo has used the profits of DS/Wii to become an unstoppable game production machine, and that is something Sony and MS will never be able to beat, only Nintendo can undo themselves at this point.

I picture you as the actual Dragon when you speak.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

That's a huge compliment :)

Like it or not, it´s true that the console market is decreasing year after year, and there´s nothing in the future pointing to its recover. People are not willing to spent money in expensive game machines anymore, and videogames will again become a niche market. All three major console makers must rethink their strategy, and developers must rethink their production costs. I don´t think Nintendo will fail soon, at the worse scenario we will see a replay of the GC/DS situation we had years ago, and Nintendo seems to be ok inside its home market.

The generation is nearly at the end it's normal the number goes down year over year even ps2 get a dicline in the end of this life.

If Wii U fail why should other console fail?

Like or not like it console will still alive yes it will sell less then tablet and  smartphone but still make many money for editors Square Enix make loose because of smartphone.

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

the one in the worst financial position will drop out if they can't turn it around soon enough I mean they can't keep selling buildings as they will run out of them eventually, right? RIGHT?

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

Dreamcast did not have the first party line up that Nintendo has. I know everyone always brings first parties up, but it is kind of true. Throw enough mario, Mario kart, DK, Zelda, and other games at us and people will buy it. That is what happened with the 3DS. Is it not? Sales are poor...ok! Lets throw Zelda remake, Star Fox remake, Mario kart, and Mario at consumers. Boom! Japan can have Monster Hunter.

They did that with the Gamecube too. It isn't enough for it to be "first party". The games have to be good and sell systems.

First party games are what stopped GC from being a complete failure.

As it stands now, Nintendo made good profit despite the low hardware sales and a good number of the first party games sold well on the measly 21 mil userbase with games like SSBM, Mario Kart, M Sunshine, LOZ:WW and LM selling more than 3 million.

I have no doubt Wii U will do better than GC, so no worries for Nintendo as far as I'm concerned. They're probably the only one of the three who can sustain themselves without third parties

I don't think this guy is right though, Sony and MS would have to be dumb to not realise if the industry is on the edge or something. Iwata has already shown that Nintendo sees some of the problems facing us in the future.

I honestly doubt they profited on GC. They were selling Gameboy and DS like crazy at the time, which helped a lot.

They made a profit on every console sold (I believe), and games didn't cost anywhere near as much to develop so a game selling 500k would easily turn a profit for them. Why wouldn't it have?

I wouldn`t say that this gen will be unsustainable for Xbox 720 and PS4 to the point of one of them leaving, but seeing as it will be the first time both MS and Sony will release both consoles at the same time (PS2 came first and then Xbox 360 came first) it will make a dent on both consoles.
This time neither manufacturer will have time to gain awareness.

Overall, i think PS4 and X720`s biggest obstacles will be PS3 and Xbox360.
These two consoles have great catalogues and will have lower prices. More if it`s true that Kinect will como bundled with X720 and Dualshock 4 is revamped, than the prices of the consoles will go up.
My prediction is that prices will go from 350 to 450 - most likely 400/450.
If this happens and prices go up for games than the adaptation rate for both consoles will be low. Why? For 1 or 2 years developers will support PS3 and Xbox360 giving them few reasons to run and pay 400/450 for a new gaming console to play games they can have on older, cheaper consoles.
And given that both consoles seem to have high tie ratios, buying games will be more affordable on PS3 and Xbox 360 than on the coming generation.

Wii U is facing what will probably be it`s dark period in all of it`s generation. Honestly, better facing it now than when the other two consoles arrive.
If Nintendo can get it`s act together after March with Zelda and another big hitter for the Christmas period (probably Mario Kart) and then a flow of 1st and 3rd party titles following Christmas, then it`s all set to do what 3DS did.

They made a profit when it cost $99? And didn't it cost $199 at launch? I find that doubtful, considering its relative power.

I can't find a press release, but I remember them saying that the 3DS was the first console they'd ever sold for a loss, so I'd imagine so. Or break-even at $99, at least.

But that's what makes the Wii-U's situation even more difficult. It has a very expensive controller, something the Gamecube didn't. They probably couldn't even cut the price to $199 without taking a serious loss per sold unit. So if Wii-u sales don't pick up, there's not much Nintendo can do.

If one of the big three is leaving the console race this generation, i think it's going to be Nintendo. After that i can see them focusing on mobile devices, maybe even release a Nintendo tablet(something i think the Wii-U controller should have been in the first place).

Except Nintendo have a shitton of money and one console isn't going to drive them out of the console market.

I'm not saying they will be forced, but they could very well make the desicion to drop out themselves if Wii-U fails. Focus is shifting towards mobile device anyway, and it's a market Nintendo has been very succesfull in for decades. Like i said, a Nintendo tablet could be great, with the ability to stream to a bigger screen. In 2-3 years mobile technology will probably have advanced to the point that they could make a tablet that's more powerfull than the Wii-U.
