It's an interesting article, but I think it's a matter of perspective. Jumping to conclusions in general is pointless here. Despite his words though, he managed to say precisely dick all.

The guy is only stating this because there is an overall idea that the gaming market is in a state of turmoil. That's something everyone has already managed to figure out. Some say that everyone will make it out and into the next gen, others say that it's going to be a change. Nobody actually knows, but it IS safe to say that changes are going to come simply because that's the way things works. As gamers, you should all know this by now. 25 years ago, those of you who were alive and old enough, you were still playing around on SEGA consoles and different variations of the NES. Games were still blocky and were amazing at 256 colours. Times change and we're getting to see that change as a sort of societal evolution. There are a lot more gamers these days, but many are phone or tablet gamers. Steam and Origin has now turned PC gaming back into a mainstream thing when it was faltering for ages and was basically saved by the MMO.

There's no point in rhetoric or claims, like a five year old, doing a 'MINE! MINE!' argument back and forth of who will bow out. Every company has a horse in the race, so there's no way to know one way or another. All that text in the article for one statement: that 'gaming is at a weird place right now'. That's pretty much all.

Even if Nintendo bleed money from now until the end of time, they'll still have enough money to stay until gen 16.

I thought the narrative was that handhelds were doomed-er because of smartphones and shit. Don't pull a Whedon on me and introduce a twist that makes no sense just so that the viewer doesn't see it coming!

I don't think any of them will drop out, but the console side of things is completely unsustainable as it is now. Only through radical change will it remain viable--and I doubt any of the Big Three will be willing to make that change unless the next gen blows up in their faces completely.

i have a iPhone 5 and a iPad.. i won't be buying the PS4 now as iOS games just fill my gaming addiction and the stores and gameplay are so deep.
