Forums - General - Apple could destroy Microsofts Xbox business in the blink of an eye if it wants, says Xbox founder

What would be the harm of Apple entering on the console market? Extra competition wouldn't hurt the consumers.
We may not be all fans of Apple, but I really don't see why it would be such an apocalyptic event if they tried their hand at this. We'd grow with it, adapt, find new favorites, maybe watch another Dreamcast die...who can say?

Apple has 130 billion in the bank and no debt. They could destroy a lot of things by simply buying them out. Xbox brand however isn't something that they would be able to touch as that is one of the few consumer facing successes Microsoft has and they aren't in need of cash.

yup, just like how they destoryed things by making their own map app and Apple T.V.. which btw, I asked a sales representative at Apple store "So I have a PS3, what benefit would an Apple T.V bring?". His reply "None"

Apple TV is now selling at about half the rate of Xbox 360 (2 million vs. 5 million last quarter) and unlike the 360 it's growing at 60% year-over-year.  Since you didn't mention having any iPad or iPhone, the Apple TV's function is basically reduced to a Netflix/Hulu player, which the PS3 is already capable of.  So it was accurate for the store rep to say that an Apple TV wouldn't add much to your life, but gosh, there sure are a lot of iPhones and iPads out there!

Apple has barely begun to invest in Apple TV -- they don't run any ads for it, and most people don't even know what it is -- but the brand is growing steadily on the back of iOS.  Apple TV is already outselling its direct competitors in the market, such as Roku, and Google TV has been a dismal failure.  Should Apple decide the time is finally right to make an aggressive push, it would be rather foolish to discount their presence.

So  I need to buy $600 iphone/ipad in order to make use of a $100 Apple TV?

Apple T.V is competing against smart t.vs which are built-in to all new t.v sets. Would anyone spend extra $700 on Ipad/iphone + apple t.v to _______ (please fill in the blank).

Guess what, everyone already has the iPad/iPhone, so they are spending an extra $100.  Think of the current Apple TV as an accessory like Kinect, selling to people who already have Xbox.

My point is that despite its current limitations it is already selling quite well (just not mindbogglingly well like the iPad).  When Apple TV drops those limitations and actually evolves into a major product, sales will ________ (please fill in the blank).

Without Steve Jobs, Apple will be as they were in the mid-80's to mid-90's. Give it time; it's starting.

So IOS only having  < 20% market share = 'everyone already has the IPad/IPhone'?

What limitations do Apple T.V have?  Not being able to sync with non-apple products? You actually believe Apple will one day open their IOS?

The problem with this guy is he lives out in AppLand where cheap to make little silly apps sell for $0.99 to lots of people who need something to do on the toilet at work.

That's not what people want on the box next to their TV. I don't want to trade Halo 5 for Angry Birds Lord of the Rings Edition. Real gamers want real games and they spend real money on them. Nobody is going to make a top tier game like Halo and sell it for $0.99.

Yes, yes, by all means. In the same way Apple blew them away in the PC world, business software, phones (well one out of three.)

But I kid. Apple could do some interesting things, but I think it would mostly hurt Nintendo and Sony as Xbox Live is more developed than either of those in a beyond gaming experience (IMO.)

I think they would make an integrated system directed with app more than games. Sort of like how Xbox Live is now.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

I want Apple to enter TV business as rumored. I think they will fail in this department, because it is not a portable product and you can't show it off without letting someone in your house.

And it won't be cheap so the 12 - 18 years old targer audience will disappear.
And the yearly upgrades are not that easy to handle.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
