Forums - General - Apple could destroy Microsofts Xbox business in the blink of an eye if it wants, says Xbox founder

yup, just like how they destoryed things by making their own map app and Apple T.V.. which btw, I asked a sales representative at Apple store "So I have a PS3, what benefit would an Apple T.V bring?". His reply "None"

One product below average doesn't mean anything, specially for one know for heavy hits like Apple. I don't see anyone using Zune as an example why MS hardware is doomed to failure.

Anyways I don't know why you even quoted him - it's not like your post offer any relevant insight on his consideration of financial matters.

ha Microsoft will kill itself if they rumors are true about pre-owned games

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

Apple had 4 "hit" products in the last 12 years. iPod, iTunes, iPad, iPhone. All are consumer facing devices and Apple is very much a consumer facing company.

Microsoft on the other had has 3 skillsets in which they have had success. Consumer side, busines side and the cloud/applications side.

Zune was a market flop but microsoft triend and it failed. Call me when apple even tries to compete with Microsoft on the business or cloud front.

Guy talks a lot of bullshit. Apple TVs aren't even that popular.

I feel like Nintendo would be most harmed by Apple entering the market; they'd easily take all of the casual customers. For the hardcores, however, I doubt it would happen.

All of this, of course, is just my opinion.

Dark Souls > Skyrim.
Halo 4 is the best damn FPS since Halo 3.

His reasoning for apple being able to 'destroy' things is based on apple having '130 billion in the bank and no debt". I mearly provided examples where the company with '130 billion in the bank and no debt' failed to destroy.

Having a bunch of cash in hand doesn't mean you can casually jump into a random market. Why doesn't apple go into oil exporting, with 130 billion in the bank and no debt they can no doubt destroy 'exxon business in the blink of an eye'. .. ehm.. no.

Apple has 130 billion in the bank and no debt. They could destroy a lot of things by simply buying them out. Xbox brand however isn't something that they would be able to touch as that is one of the few consumer facing successes Microsoft has and they aren't in need of cash.

Apple TV is now selling at about half the rate of Xbox 360 (2 million vs. 5 million last quarter) and unlike the 360 it's growing at 60% year-over-year.  Since you didn't mention having any iPad or iPhone, the Apple TV's function is basically reduced to a Netflix/Hulu player, which the PS3 is already capable of.  So it was accurate for the store rep to say that an Apple TV wouldn't add much to your life, but gosh, there sure are a lot of iPhones and iPads out there!

Apple has barely begun to invest in Apple TV -- they don't run any ads for it, and most people don't even know what it is -- but the brand is growing steadily on the back of iOS.  Apple TV is already outselling its direct competitors in the market, such as Roku, and Google TV has been a dismal failure.  Should Apple decide the time is finally right to make an aggressive push, it would be rather foolish to discount their presence.

This is complete hogwash. Apple would have to sell their TVs into millions and millions of homes before it had an install base to rival the consoles. Even then, a TV with that kind of functionality would costs thousands, and at that price it's not all competitive with game systems, which sell for less than $300 for most of their life-span.

The Screamapillar is easily identified by its constant screaming—it even screams in its sleep. The Screamapillar is the favorite food of everything, is sexually attracted to fire, and needs constant reassurance or it will die.

The thread's name is wrong. It said all console makers not just Microsoft, TYPICAL!!!

Hmm, the current "games" available on such services would have no chance to "kill" the likes of GTA, CoD, Need for Speed, FIFA, NBA, Mario, Uncharted, Gears of War, Halo, Mass Effect etc.
Its complete hogwash.
If anything, consumers are becoming more aware of the markets and what they offer and Apple are becoming less relevant, slowly but certainly.
They're not going away, not by a long shot, but the market will be a lot more even in the near future and Apple likely won't dominate more than Sony, MS or Nintendo in most areas.

Consumer awareness + stellar competition + technology and services starting to lag behind = tougher times for Apple and better times for consumers who won't have to take it up the proverbial bum all year, every year.
